The six genders in Jewish law
Published by yonathanreches on October 16, 2020
In fact, Jewish law has always recognized six distinct genders, each with their own unique sets of rights, obligations, and expectations: male, female, androgynos, tumtum, saris, and aylonit. All of these genders are richly explored in Talmudic texts compiled during the Third through Eighth Centuries of the Common Era (this post barely scratches the surface and I hope you’ll follow the links to learn more!). In some senses, these texts were visionary, even revolutionary, in their exploration of gender. However, all of them were written exclusively by men for men, and consequently suffered from some of the same shortcomings that humanity’s regard for gender has always had.
