NSW auditor-general publishes damning report into government grant scheme at centre of pork barrelling claims

A damning auditor-general's report into a NSW grants scheme at the centre of pork barrelling allegations has described it as "deficient" and "lacking integrity".

Key points:

The report states 96 per cent of the $250m fund went to councils in Coalition-held seats

The auditor-general finds little records of why projects were chosen

Gladys Berejiklian previously said the practice was "not illegal"

Auditor-general Margaret Crawford has found 96 per cent of grants available from the $250 million Stronger Communities Fund were allocated to projects based in Coalition-held seats.

The former premier Gladys Berejiklian had previously conceded that grants from the scheme were used to try to shore up Coalition-held seats in the lead up to the last election, but said the practice was "not unique" to her government.

In her report to parliament, Ms Crawford said the scheme's guidelines "lacked the necessary information to safeguard against biased or subjective assessment".

The report paints a picture of chaotic decision making, where funding for projects was determined by Ms Berekijlian, her deputy John Barilaro and the minister for local government.

Decisions were then communicated by their staff through emails to the Office of Local Government, which was tasked with administering the scheme.

Ms Crawford wrote that these emails contained "little or no information about the basis for the council or project selection" and that funds were allocated "without questioning or recording the basis for selection".

While the local government minister was responsible for distributing the funds, he only approved two of the 24 projects that received money — with the rest identified by the offices of Ms Berejiklian and Mr Barilaro.

Ms Crawford concluded that the exclusion of information and the lack of formality in those approvals "prevent accountability and transparency over the government's approach to selecting councils for funding".

In October 2020 a parliamentary inquiry heard that Ms Berejiklian's office had physically shredded and then digitally deleted documents relating to the Stronger Communities Fund.

Her staff gave evidence they had sent emails saying Ms Berejiklian had "approved" or "signed off" on projects.

But one staffer told the inquiry that was just a "turn of phrase" and that the then premier was not technically approving the payments as that "was not a role she had under the program".

A month later Ms Berejiklian told reporters she was only "consulted" and "provided advice" on the grants, but she conceded the way the scheme was used amounted to pork barrelling.

"It's not something the community likes … but it's an accusation I will wear," she said.

"It's not an illegal practice. Unfortunately it does happen from time to time by every government."

Feds suspend a Homeland Security chief following raid on his Michigan home

The head of Homeland Security in Michigan and Ohio has been suspended following a search of his home by federal internal affairs investigators, his lawyer said.

The focus of the investigation is unclear but raises questions about the conduct of Homeland Security Special Agent in Charge Vance Callender, 49, of Royal Oak. He is tasked with helping prevent terrorism, protecting the country’s international borders and combating a range of federal crimes, including child pornography and sex trafficking.

His home was searched Jan. 28 by agents with Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General, Callender’s lawyer, Nick Oberheiden, told The Detroit News.

Officials with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Detroit have recused themselves and the investigation is being handled out of Chicago to avoid any conflict of interest.

The federal search warrant that would outline probable cause for the raid, and specify the nature of the investigation, is sealed in federal court.

Callender, meanwhile, has been placed on administrative leave, Oberheiden said.

“That was motivated so as to not influence or hinder or in any way participate in the investigation,” Oberheiden said Wednesday while also addressing his client’s state of mind. “He’s well-spirited.”

He believes Callender is being paid during the suspension.

Oberheiden declined to talk about the focus of the investigation or what, if anything, was seized during the search.

“We don’t participate in discussions that could infringe upon the presumption of innocence,” Oberheiden said. “I can confirm we have entered a dialogue with investigators.”

One witness to the search said as many as 15 investigators spent about six hours at Callender’s pea-green Colonial east of downtown Royal Oak.

Is China Using COVID Quarantines to Rig the Winter Olympics? Athletes Blow the Lid, And It's Chilling

Olympic athletes are exposing the disturbing measures China is taking in an attempt to hold a “COVID-free” Olympics.

According to the UK Daily Mail, dozens of athletes said they had experienced inhumane conditions while in isolation due to positive COVID-19 tests.

Russian biathlete Valeria Vasnetsova said she was served an extremely small and unappealing meal three times a day for five days while she was in isolation. By the end, she said her “bones [were] sticking out,” the Daily Mail reported.

Vasnetsova posted a picture of the unsavory meal she was provided to Instagram.

Polish speed skater Natalia Maliszewska had a similarly terrible experience. She said she was repeatedly moved into and out of isolation due to conflicting results from the unreliable COVID-19 tests being used in China.

One particular night was burned into her memory. She was woken up in the middle of the night and told she would be able to return to the Olympic Village, but officials then reversed their decision and sent her back to isolation.

“I was sitting in the ambulance,” Maliszewska told the Daily Mail. “It was 3am. I was crying like crazy because I didn’t know what was going on. I did not feel safe at all.”

Finland men’s hockey head coach Jukka Jalonen told Yahoo! Sports that one of his players, Marko Anttila, remained in isolation on Sunday despite the fact that 18 days had passed since his positive test.

“We know that he’s fully healthy and ready to go and that’s why we think that China, for some reason, they won’t respect his human rights, and that’s not a great situation,” Jalonen said.

He added that Anttila was “not getting food” during his isolation and said the treatment was causing significant mental stress for him.

As of Sunday, over 350 Olympic participants had tested positive for COVID-19 since arriving in Beijing, Yahoo reported. This includes athletes, journalists and other Olympic staff members.

Upon receiving a positive test, participants must go to special hotels to isolate themselves. They cannot leave until they have no symptoms and have received two negative PCR tests at least 24 hours apart.

Top Biden science adviser resigns following bullying reports

"I am devastated that I caused hurt to past and present colleagues by the way in which I have spoken to them," Politico reports.

Dr. Eric Lander, President Joe Biden's top science adviser, resigned Monday after the White House reported finding credible evidence that he bullied and mistreated staff.

Lander, Science and Technology Policy Office director, wrote in his resignation letter, "I am devastated that I caused hurt to past and present colleagues by the way in which I have spoken to them," Politico reports.

Hours prior, White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters that "senior White House officials conveyed directly to Dr. Lander that his behavior was inappropriate and the corrective actions that were needed, which were — which the White House will monitor for compliance moving forward."

Psaki also faced questions about why Lander was not outright fired when Biden promised at the beginning of his administration to fire anyone found to be participating in inappropriate behavior.

Politico first reported the two-month White House investigation into allegations that Lander bullied Rachel Wallace, his then-general counsel.

Kremlin reacts to report on US missiles deployment to Ukraine

Kiev’s reported request to US to deploy THAAD missile defense systems in Ukraine could lead to serious destabilization, Moscow says

Ukraine has asked the US to place high-altitude missile defense systems in one of its eastern regions bordering Russia, TASS reported Monday citing a diplomatic source. The Kremlin has branded the potential move “destabilizing.”

Kiev has reportedly reached out to Washington, seeking to have “several batteries” of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile interceptors deployed in the country’s eastern region of Kharkov, along with “corresponding radar equipment,” the source told the news agency.

“The AN/TPY-2 radar system, which is part of the THAAD complex, is capable of watching the aerospace situation over a significant part of Russian territory and can allow Kiev and its NATO allies to ‘peek’ deep into Russian territory for a distance of up to 1,000 km,” the source explained.

Asked about the report on Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that the potential deployment would further escalate the ongoing crisis around Ukraine.

“This would be yet another step towards destabilizing the situation,” Peskov told reporters.

The West has recently sent in around 1,000 tons of military equipment to prop up the Kiev regime amid fears of the allegedly looming Russian ‘invasion.’ Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba revealed the scale of the Western military aid on Monday, praising the “international political and economic support” Kiev has received.

“Over these weeks and months we have received more than $1.5 billion, and more than 1,000 tons of arms and armaments,” he said.

In January alone, the US delivered 79 tons of military hardware to Ukraine, including some 300 Javelin anti-tank systems. The UK sent in a sizable haul of weapons as well, delivering NLAW shoulder-fired anti-tank missiles, as well as deploying additional military instructors to teach Ukrainian forces how to use the systems.

While top Western officials and media have repeatedly claimed Moscow was seeking to attack its neighbor, no actual proof for such allegations has ever emerged. Moscow has consistently denied the accusations, maintaining it has zero plans to attack Ukraine, while adding that troop movements inside Russian territory were Russia's business alone.

Blake Masters: “Joe Biden Violates the Constitution EVERY SINGLE DAY – a Culture of Lawlessness – Look at How They’re Going After President Trump!”

Blake Masters joined Tucker Carlson on Monday night to discuss the historic crime wave and record numbers of homicides in America today.

Masters told Tucker put blame where it is due — at the feet of Joe Biden.

Blake Masters: “It’s not just low-level crime. You got to look at who’s in charge. You got to look at the people at the top. Look at Joe Biden. Biden violates the Constitution like every single day! And that’s the highest law of our land. And so this culture of lawlessness is propped up by powerful Democrats and by bad people. Bad people like George Soros. Right? George Soros funds all of these leftwing DAs and you get these DAs in office and they don’t want to arrest anybody. Because that would be racist. Tucker we’ve got criminals thriving at the bottom of our system because we got criminals running it at the top.

Tucker Carlson: That’s such a good point. If the President of the United States violates law every single day, importing people illegally from other countries into ours. Without consent of the governed. Then why should you even pause before stealing Louis Vuitton?

Blake Masters: Well, exactly. And the thing to really look out for here is the weaponization of our Justice System. They’ve just completely weaponized it. If you were a BLM activist in Minneapolis, Minnesota in June of 2020 you could burn down a police precinct and nothing would happen to you. But if you were in the capital on January 6th and you stepped over the line you’re hunted down and treated as a terrorist. Or look at how they’re going after President Trump! And now his family, these leftwing attorneys they want to prosecute the Trumps. Not because they did anything wrong. They DIDN’T! But because he led the MAGA movement and that terrifies them. So this political retribution has got to stop! We cannot let these leftwing psychopaths get away with this!

Excellent points! And too few politicians will make them!

When was the last time you heard a US Senate candidate stand up for President Trump and his family?
