There's an interesting portrayal of this in The Fountainhead. The main master of destruction (of society) is Ellsworth Toohey. Peter Keating is a half-shit architect that ET decides would be a perfect pawn to destroy the system. He praises him in media, steers million dollar contracts his way for years. Then, he decides to simply use someone else. Keating has a massive meltdown because fortune has shifted and ruined him. The meltdown is especially pronounced because there is simply zero reason why he should have been rich and famous in the first place. No talent, no work ethic, no integrity.
Think of HRC as well as hundreds of celebrities. They freak out because they realize that they never deserved their success in th first place (Auto-tune, etc), but they were convenient pawns. Unfortunately that success is addictive, so the meltdown is epic.
