I trust no gov't numbers, but fwiw, when THEY are claiming it's this bad, my default reaction would be to bet it's worse.
Gotta love how the numbers are kinda meaningless, in terms of leaving out some of the huge stuff that people actually buy and makes up a BIG PERCENTAGE of their total purchases. Energy is the killer—low-to-middle income people can easily see all of whatever discretionary income they might have wiped out by only fuel, natural gas and electricity increases.
