Border delay prompts GM Delta plant (DETROIT) to cancel shifts

UPDATE 5:40 a.m. (WLNS) — WXYZ in Detroit reported around 5:00 a.m. on Thursday the Ambassador Bridge was closed in both directions.

Around 7:45 a.m. Windsor Police said the Ambassador Bridge is not closed U.S. bound but the presence of demonstrators at the bridge is causing delays and making it difficult to cross.

They encouraged everyone to avoid both access points.

UPDATE: (WLNS) — The General Motors Delta Township assembly plant has now cancelled the first shift production at Lansing Delta Township for Thursday, Feb. 10, because of production disruptions at the Canadian border.

Canadian truck drivers are protesting COVID-19 restrictions along border crossings with Michigan.

These drivers are blocking traffic, and have been for days. Because of that, it is impacting supplies coming into the U.S.

For three days now, the Ambassador Bridge, which connects Ontario to Detroit, has been blocked.

MSU professor Jason Miller said that’s a problem for both the United States and Canada.

“In terms of numbers ballpark it about $250 million a day of imports and exports just for the auto sector flow across that bridge,” Professor Miller said.

Disruption at the border spilled over close to home.

Wednesday, the second shift at GM’s Delta Township assembly plant was canceled.

Officials with General Motors said that’s because of a parts shortage that is directly related to the border protests.

Cancellations don’t stop there. The first shift on February 10 has also been canceled

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer released a statement Thursday calling on Canadian authorities to resolve the Ambassador Bridge closure.

As the demonstration by truck drivers protesting Canada’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate stretches into its fourth day, it’s disrupting Michigan’s economy, including the automotive industry, manufacturing, agriculture and more, according to the governor.

“My message is simple: Reopen traffic on the bridge.

“In Michigan, our economy continues to grow because of our hardworking people and innovative small businesses. Now, that momentum is at risk. Commercial traffic is at a standstill at the Ambassador Bridge and heavily backed up at the Blue Water Bridge.

“The blockade is having a significant impact on Michigan’s working families who are just trying to do their jobs. Our communities and automotive, manufacturing and agriculture businesses are feeling the effects. It’s hitting paychecks and production lines. That is unacceptable.

“The Ambassador Bridge is the busiest land border crossing in North America, used by tens of thousands of commuters and truck drivers carrying hundreds of millions of dollars of goods every day. Countless Michiganders rely on this daily flow of goods and people to get things done.

“It is imperative that Canadian local, provincial, and national governments de-escalate this economic blockade. They must take all necessary and appropriate steps to immediately and safely reopen traffic so we can continue growing our economy, supporting good-paying jobs and lowering costs for families.”
