US encourages Canada to use ‘federal powers’ against protesters - media

The Department of Homeland Security has reportedly pledged its “full support” to Canada in dealing with trucker protests

The White House has reportedly called on the Canadian government to employ “federal powers” to shut down trucker Covid-19 protests in Ottawa and elsewhere, offering the “full support” of the US Department of Homeland Security.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported on Thursday that members of US President Joe Biden’s administration – including Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas – “held a series of high level calls with their Canadian counterparts, urging them to use their federal powers to end the blockades.”

The CBC also reported that members of the Biden administration had offered Canada “the full support of the Department of Homeland Security” to deal with the protests.

In a statement to the CBC, the White House claimed US officials had been “engaged around the clock” to bring the protest “to a swift end.”

Truckers protesting Covid-19 restrictions in Canada, which require them to be fully vaccinated or undergo quarantine every time they cross the US border, have blockaded the Ambassador Bridge which connects Windsor, Ontario to Detroit, Michigan – creating heavy economic losses and angering officials on both sides of the border.

Trudeau’s public safety minister on Wednesday called the bridge protests illegal, accusing the truckers and their supporters of “hurting Canadians.”

Protesters have also camped outside Canada’s Parliament in Ottawa for several weeks, calling on the government and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to reverse the country’s Covid-19 policies and mandates.

Trudeau and other government officials, however, referred to the protesters as a “fringe minority” and extremists, while police in Ottawa have threatened to arrest protesters and anyone who provides them with “material support” such as fuel. Hundreds of protesters responded to the police threats this week by marching through Ottawa carrying fuel cans – many of which were empty or contained water instead of gasoline.

Biden: ‘I’m Rejecting’ Claims in Army Report We Weren’t Prepared for Afghanistan Withdrawal, But I Wasn’t Told We Were Prepared

News,” President Joe Biden dismissed the accounts in an Army report that the administration wasn’t prepared for the withdrawal from Afghanistan but denied he was told that administration officials were prepared and knew it was time to leave.

Host Lester Holt asked, “I have to draw your attention to that Army report, an investigative report that’s come out about the lead-up to the withdrawal from Afghanistan. It interviewed many military officials and officers who said the administration ignored the handwriting on the wall, another described trying to get folks in the embassy ready to evacuate and encountering people who were in — essentially in denial of the situation. Does any of that ring true to you?”

Biden responded, “No, no. That’s not what I was told.”

Holt then asked, “That you were told that the U.S. administration officials were prepared, they knew it was time to get out?”

Biden answered, “No. What I was told — no one told me that — look, there was no good time to get out.”

He also stated, “But if we had not gotten out, they acknowledged that we would have had to put a hell of a lot more troops back in. It wasn’t just 2,000, 4,000. We would have had to significantly increase the number of troops, and we’re back in this war of attrition. And there was no way we were ever going to unite Ukraine — I mean, excuse me, Iraq — Afghanistan, no way that was going to happen. And so, this was a much wiser thing to do.”

Holt then asked, “I just want to clarify, are you rejecting the conclusions or the accounts that are in this Army report?”

Biden responded, “Yes, I am.” He added, “I’m rejecting them.”

Hillary Clinton is reportedly expected to deliver remarks next week at the New York Democratic convention

It is anticipated that Hillary Clinton will deliver remarks at the upcoming New York State Democratic Party Convention, CNBC has reported, citing individuals familiar with the issue.

"She's beloved by the mainstream members of the Democratic Party and her popularity is likely higher than that of President Biden. It’s good for her because it keeps her relevant and her appearance is likely meant to galvanize the party and the audience," noted one of the individuals who claimed that Clinton is slated to speak, according to the outlet.

Clinton, who previously served as a U.S. senator from the Empire State, later served as secretary of state during a portion of President Obama's tenure. When Clinton was the Democratic presidential nominee during the 2020 election, she lost to Republican candidate Donald Trump.

"We've reached out to a number of people to speak and, you know, we’re waiting back on confirmation from a number of people. So there are a few things in the works," Chris Melnyczuk, chief of staff to the chair of the New York State Democratic Party, told CNBC. "We've reached out to a number of folks, we're not going to say who we've reached out to," he responded when asked if Clinton had been invited to deliver remarks.

Clinton is slated to speak at the New York State Democratic Committee's Nominating Convention next week on Feb. 17, a source told the New York Post.

At the 2018 convention, Clinton delivered remarks backing then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

In an opinion piece last month, Doug Schoen and Andrew Stein suggested that Clinton is probably the Democratic Party's best prospect to win the 2024 presidential contest.

"Several circumstances—President Biden’s low approval rating, doubts over his capacity to run for re-election at 82, Vice President Kamala Harris’s unpopularity, and the absence of another strong Democrat to lead the ticket in 2024—have created a leadership vacuum in the party, which Mrs. Clinton viably could fill," Schoen and Stein opined. "If Democrats want a fighting chance at winning the presidency in 2024, Mrs. Clinton is likely their best option."
