U.S. accounts drive Canadian convoy protest chatter

Known U.S.-based sources of misleading information have driven a majority of Facebook and Twitter posts about the Canadian COVID-19 vaccine mandate protest, per German Marshall Fund data shared exclusively with Axios.

"They can flood the zone — making something news and distorting what appears to be popular," said Karen Kornbluh, senior fellow and director of the Digital Innovation and Democracy Initiative at the German Marshall Fund.

The Democracy Fund, the private foundation of eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, gave $1.5 million to the Democracy Docket Legal Fund in 2020, its grant database shows.

"[Marc Elias] just launched his new firm, but what has not been reported is the funding source for his lawsuits," Americans for Public Trust Executive Director Caitlin Sutherland told Fox News. "Mr. Elias frequently raises money for the Democracy Docket Action Fund, but what he isn't telling his loyal followers is the fund is a project of the Arabella-connected North Fund."

"And his other group, [Democracy Docket Legal Fund], is just a project of the Arabella-managed Hopewell Fund," Sutherland told Fox News. "All of this together means that as Arabella Advisors' dark money attorney, Mr. Elias will have access to nearly unlimited funding to file lawsuits across the country."

RNZ reported that the protesters responded to the music with jeers and by playing back the 1984 song "We're Not Gonna Take It" by American band Twisted Sister, which has already been somewhat adopted as an anthem by the Canadian truckers.

The so-called "Freedom Convoy" rallies in several parts of the globe follow a movement in Canada which has seen truckers protesting against vaccine mandates, Covid-19 restrictions and the Liberal government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
