Corrected identification of object about to hit the moon

Short version: back in March 2015, I (mis)identified this object as 2015-007B, the second stage of the DSCOVR spacecraft.

We now have good evidence that it is actually 2014-065B, the booster for the Chang'e 5-T1 lunar mission. (It will, however, still hit the moon within a few kilometers of the predicted spot on 2022 March 4 at 12:25 UTC, within a few seconds of the predicted time. In fact, we've gotten more observations refining the impact point slightly.)

Rogue rocket to hit Moon misidentified

An out-of-control rocket expected to hit the Moon in early March wasn’t built by SpaceX, an astronomer has said

American astronomer Bill Gray, who earlier said that a stage from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket was going to hit the Moon on March 4, has admitted that he and his colleague have misidentified the object.

The honor of causing what appears to be the first-ever accidental lunar impact won’t go to Elon Musk, but to China, according to the scientist, who tracks asteroids and other objects sailing throughout the Solar System.

“I (mis)identified this object… We now have good evidence that it is actually 2014-065B, the booster for the Chang’e 5-T1 lunar mission,” Gray wrote in a correction that he posted in his blog on Saturday.

Meta to install controversial sea-floor cable

Deep-sea cable installers are about to begin laying a transatlantic cable line for Meta through Nova Scotian fishing grounds as soon as this week. (CBC)

Local fishing and conservation groups said Monday the project was pushed through without enough – or any – input from the community.

The process is expected around month and a half, asfishermenare being told to stay at least one nautical mile away from cable-laying vessels.

Mauritius raises flag on Chagos Islands - challenging British control

Mauritian PM Pravind Jugnauth described it as an "historic moment" - saying it was time for the UK to cede control. (BBC)

The UK has claimed ownership over the islands since Napoleonic times, but in the 1960s and 1970s it was condemned for forcibly expelling around 1,500 Chagossians to Mauritius and the Seychelles.

In 2019, the International Court of Justice ruled that Britain should return the islands to Mauritius, which was endorsed by the UN.

However, the British Foreign Office dismissed Mauritius’ claims over the islands saying, "The UK has no doubt as to our sovereignty over the British Indian Ocean territory."
