After the Honduran justice system signed the extradition order requested by the US against former president Juan Orlando Hernandez, dozens of people moved to the elegant residential area where he lives in Tegucigalpa on Tuesday.

Dozens of police officers could be seen waiting for the arrest warrant against Hernandez to become effective amidst a large media presence. Supporters and detractors of the former president were also present.

Juan Orlando Hernandez, 53, was president of Honduras between 2014 and 2022, ending his term on 27 January. The New York justice system requested his extradition on charges of drug trafficking and money laundering. His brother, Juan Antonio "Tony" Hernandez, is currently serving a life sentence in the US on charges related to drug and arms trafficking.

SOT, Flor Idalia Aguilar Cordomo, student of medicine (Spanish): "We are here today to say goodbye to a public official who did not meet expectations for 12 years. And we have no health today, we have no places in public universities, we don't have an education system that we deserve, because education is a right and it has been lost. Children cannot read, we students do not have places and there are several situations that should not be happening but it is the reality of our country".

SOT, street vendor (Spanish): "We hope that justice is done in this country, for so many people who have suffered and so much that has been stolen, I don't think only him, I think many members of parliament".
