Brazil mudslides and floods leave at least 58 dead

The death toll from devastating mudslides and floods that swept through a mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro state has reached 58, local authorities said Wednesday.

The city of Petropolis was slammed by a deluge on Tuesday, and Mayor Rubens Bomtempo said the number of dead could rise as searchers picked through the wreckage.

Rosilene Virgilio, 49, was in tears as she recalled the pleas for help from a woman she couldn’t save.

“Yesterday there was a woman screaming, ‘Help! Get me out of here!’ But we couldn’t do anything; the water was gushing out, the mud was gushing out,” Virgilio told The Associated Press. “Our city unfortunately is finished.”

Petropolis is a German-influenced city named for a former emperor. Nestled in the mountains above the coastal metropolis, for almost two centuries it has been a refuge for people escaping summer heat and tourists keen to explore Brazil’s “Imperial City.” It features stately mansions along its waterways, but its mountainsides are covered with homes packed tightly together, some of which lack proper foundations.

Gov. Claudio Castro said that he was mustering all the state government’s heavy machinery to help dig out the buried area. He told journalists that soldiers were already working in the stricken region, which saw almost more than 900 deaths from heavy rainfall in January 2011.

The state fire department said late Tuesday the area got just over 10 inches of rain within three hours Tuesday — almost as much as during the previous 30 days combined.

Biden recalls putting dead dog on Republican voter’s doorstep as young politician

During a speech on Tuesday, Joe Biden jokingly reminisced about putting a dead dog on a Republican woman’s doorstep during his time serving in county government when he was in his 20s.

While giving remarks at the National Association of Counties 2022 Legislative Conference in Washington, he president spoke about his time representing what he described as a mixed-income district.

He said at one point he fielded a request from a wealthier Republican woman who had a dead dog on her lawn.

“I got a call one night; the woman said to me – obviously not of the same persuasion as I was politically – called me and said: ‘There’s a dead dog on my lawn,’” said Biden, telling the story.

“And I said: ‘Yes, ma’am.’ I said: ‘Have you called county?’ She said: ‘Yes, they’re not here.’ And I said: ‘Well, I’ll get them in the morning.’”

The woman was not satisfied by Biden’s answer, telling Biden that she wanted the dog off her lawn now and that she paid his salary.

Delta passenger tried to open exit door in hopes of sharing COVID vaccine views

An Oregon man tried to open an emergency exit on a Delta Air Lines flight so passengers could hear his take on COVID-19 vaccines, federal authorities said.

Michael Brandon Demarre, 32, was charged with threatening to interfere and interfering with flight crew during Friday’s flight from Salt Lake City to his home in Portland, according to the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon.

Witnesses said Demarre ripped off a plastic covering on the emergency exit door’s handle and forcefully pulled on it. A flight attendant then ordered him to stop and move to the rear of the aircraft, federal prosecutors said.

The man was ultimately restrained by the flight crew, but told authorities once on the ground in Portland that he orchestrated the scary in-flight disturbance so passengers would record him on video sharing his “thoughts on COVID-19 vaccines,” The Oregonian reported.

One passenger who filmed Demarre’s arrest said the incident occurred just 20 minutes after takeoff, according to The Register-Guard.

“The screeching of the wind and the change in pressure was felt by everyone,” the anonymous passenger told the newspaper. “One of the flight attendants miraculously happened to be right there and she was able to shut/latch the door.”

In the video of his arrest, Demarre yelled as many other passengers applauded as he was being taken off the plane, the Register-Guard reported.

“We’re all being lied to, wake up!” he said. “The Earth is bleeding, the international community hates the United States of America.”

Once subdued, flight attendants asked four other passengers to watch Demarre as he was restrained in a seat, according to an affidavit obtained by The Oregonian.

FAA sends 80 unruly airline passenger cases to FBI for possible criminal prosecution

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said Wednesday that it sent 80 unruly airline passenger cases to the FBI for possible criminal prosecution.

The FAA told FOX Business that these were the "most egregious" incidents out of the nearly 6,500 cases reported since January 2021.

Airlines have already reported 499 cases of unruly passenger incidents since the beginning of 2022, according to FAA data. The majority of cases, 324, are related to passengers not abiding by the federal mask mandate.

The FAA started investigations into 123 of those reported cases and initiated enforcement action in 59 cases, which means the FAA is in the process of levying fines for those passengers.

In 2021, there were over 5,900 cases reported to the FAA.

Man arrested for vandalism at Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port, police say

A32-year-old Saratoga Springs, N.Y., man claiming to be related to the Kennedy family was arrested Tuesday night for allegedly vandalizing the storied political clan’s compound in Hyannis Port, months after leaving a box at the property that he said contained DNA evidence to prove his assertion, legal filings show.

A police report filed in Barnstable District Court, where the suspect was slated for arraignment Wednesday on a felony charge of vandalizing property, identified him as Anthony Thomas Putnam. It wasn’t immediately clear if he had retained counsel who could speak on his behalf.

The Barnstable police report said officers responded to the compound just before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“While turning onto Marchant Ave. I could clearly see a male subject kneeling in the driveway in front of [redacted] holding a can of spray paint in each hand,” the report said, adding that Putnam was “actively spray painting the driveway.”
