Common law is still law - it is just has a different origin than statute law.

I'd agree with that - the fewer laws the better. The Ten Commandments seem to me to be the most concise yet potentially all-encompassing laws, setting out humanity's obligations to his Creator and his fellow man. From them all case law could (and should, imo) be developed.
