U.S. babies die premature at a staggering rate. The only drug to prevent it doesn’t work, the FDA says
A drug called Makena aimed at preventing premature birth doesn't work and should be taken off the market, the Food and Drug Administration says. But Makena's maker, Covis Pharma, has refused, saying the drug is safe. The company has emphasized a need by Black women, who are most at risk of preterm births.
American babies are at a far higher risk of dying before their first birthdays than those in almost any other wealthy country, largely because of premature births.
