China Courts Freeze $157 Million of Evergrande Assets Over Missed Construction Payments

HONG KONG—A Chinese court has ordered the freezing of 640.4 million yuan ($101 million) in assets held by a subsidiary of China Evergrande Group, according to a filing by contractor Shanghai Construction Group.

State-owned Shanghai Construction, which sued the Evergrande unit in the southwestern city of Chengdu in December for overdue construction fees, cited the Guangzhou Intermediate Court ruling that the assets to be frozen will include bank deposits and real estate.

Separately, Shanghai Construction Group said last week a local court in Guangzhou has frozen 361.5 million yuan of assets of a different Evergrande unit in the central province of Jiangsu for overdue payments.

Many suppliers and contractors have launched legal actions against Evergrande, the world’s most indebted property developer with over $300 billion of liabilities, over missed or late payments.

A growing number of construction and decoration companies are also writing off assets or issuing profit warnings as debt woes at Evergrande and other property developers debilitate their suppliers.

All lawsuits against the developer across the country have been centrally handled by the Guangzhou Intermediate Court since around August.

Evergrande declined to comment on the lawsuit with Shanghai Construction Group.

Company chairman Hui Ka Yan told an internal meeting earlier this month the firm aimed to fully restore construction work across China in Feb, compared with 93.2 percent at the end of last year, with a goal of delivering 600,000 apartments in 2022.

He added the firm needs to clear its debt by fully restoring construction and sales activities and not by selling off assets on the cheap.

Beijing Winter Olympics official says stories of Chinese human rights abuses are 'lies'

Tensions were evident between the International Olympic Committee spokesman and one of his counterparts at the Beijing Organising Committee on Thursday as both answered thorny questions from local and international journalists at the Winter Olympics daily press briefing.

Key points:

Olympic officials were asked questions about human rights, Xinjiang labour camps, Taiwan and Hong Kong during a daily press conference

Yan Jiarong said claims about human rights abuses were "based on lies"

The International Olympic Committee has a policy of being politically neutral

Several sensitive questions regarding human rights, Xinjiang labour camps, Taiwan and Hong Kong were batted away by Mark Adams, consistent with the IOC's stated policy of being politically neutral.

But the Beijing committee's Yan Jiarong was far more hawkish, jumping in before Mr Adams could move on.

When asked about '"concentration camps in Xinjiang and the existence of forced labour", which the UN human rights panel has said could involve more than 1 million Uyghurs, Mr Adams said it was not relevant to the IOC or the press conference.

"We are very concerned with protecting human rights within our sphere, within the Olympic Games and within the staging of the Olympic Games and protecting the rights of the athletes and all participants of the Olympic Games. That is what we do," he added.

"We leave it to other organisations such as the United Nations and international organisations to look at aspects of outside of what is happening here."

Ms Yan was quick to respond.

"I feel obliged to make a quick comment. I think these questions are based on lies. Some authorities have already disputed such false information with a lot of solid evidence."

Taiwan, or as it's called in the Olympic movement, Chinese Taipei, was also raised.

Clarification was sought on whether the IOC had intervened to force the Chinese Taipei delegation to take part in the opening ceremony two weeks ago, after they said they wouldn't.

Ms Yan, again, offered her thoughts once Mr Adams had finished talking.

"I would like to make supplementary remarks. I want to say that there is only one China in the world. Taiwan is an indivisible part of China. This is well recognised in the international community.

"We are always against the idea of politicising the Olympic Games."

Canada cops ARREST Freedom Convoy leader after warning protesters in Ottawa to 'get out now' and flooding capital's streets with officers: Trudeau fights to keep his emergency powers alive

Chris Barber, a prominent leader of the truckers' protest, was arrested in Ottawa on Thursday afternoon

Barber is the first organizer of the demonstrations to be detained, and is expected to face criminal charges

Barber is one of three people - along with fellow convoy organizers Tamara Lich and Benjamin Dichter - named in a class action lawsuit filed last week by a 21-year-old woman against the noise and disruption in Ottawa

Members of Canada's Parliament engaged in fierce debate over Trudeau's emergency powers on Thursday

Conservative Party and Bloc Québécois are opposed to his use of Emergencies Act against Freedom Convoy

But Trudeau's Liberals and allied New Democratic Party have the numbers to secure approval of the powers

Trudeau insists that his use of emergency powers is necessary to end the weeks-long protests

'It's high time that these illegal and dangerous activities stop,' Trudeau declared in Parliament

Trudeau's Justice Minister David Lametti says donors funding the protest were subject to asset seizure

Said they 'ought to be worried' about having their bank accounts frozen under emergency powers

Canadian police arrested one of the most high-profile leaders of the Freedom Convoy on Thursday afternoon, hours after Ottawa police warned protesters that they had to move their trucks from the center of the capital.

Chris Barber is being held in custody and is expected to face criminal charges, CBC reported.

Barber, a truck driver for the last 28 years who led the Saskatchewan portion of the protest convoy that has been in Ottawa for the last three weeks, was walking down the street with several friends when police detained him.

Footage posted on social media showed him being detained, and smiling calmly as he was patted down and put in a patrol car.

'Call my wife!' he said, to a friend who was filming. 'And put this on social media.'

Ottawa's Interim Police Chief Steve Bell said at a press conference on Thursday that checkpoints are being established to lock down the city's core and prevent additional protesters from joining the demonstration. He said protesters currently camped out at the demonstration are free to leave, and encouraged them to do so.

'In the last few days we have been communicating with unlawful protesters. We have told them they must leave. We want to end this unlawful protest peacefully. We are prepared to employ lawful techniquest to remove them from our streets,' he said.

'To those taking part in the unlawful protests, if you want to leave on your own terms, now is the time to do it.'

Barber was defiant earlier in the week when asked by local police and residents to move on.

'We're in talks with the city (of Ottawa) right now,' he said on Tuesday.

'We really wish we'd have a little bit more conversations with the federal government. Unfortunately, they've pretty much ignored us since we got here.'

Asked if he was worried about his bank accounts being frozen under the Emergencies Act, Barber told CKOM News: 'Nah, they can take it … (Federal officials) are trying everything they can to try and stop us … We need to put a stop to this.'

'Entitled brat': Fans of 'America's Dad' Tom Hanks slam his son Chet Hanks, 31, for claiming he didn't have a 'strong male role model' growing up

Chet said he struggled as a teenager growing up in the shadow of his famous parents

He complained he didn't have a 'strong male role model' in his life to help him navigate bullies

Hanks and Rita Wilson - who have been married 33 years - have two sons together: Chet and Truman, 25

The Forrest Gump star also has a son Colin, 43, and daughter Elizabeth Ann, 38, from a previous relationship

Tom Hanks fans were quick to defend the actor on social media

Chet, who has endured numerous controversies in recent years, is launching a new personal training business

Tom Hanks - who is widely considered 'America's Dad' and a beloved 'normal guy' in Hollywood - has been criticized by his own son.

Chet, 31, claimed he did not have a 'strong male role model' during his teens while he was struggling with the pressures of having celebrity parents.

Hanks and his wife of 33 years Rita Wilson, both 65, have two sons together - Chet and Truman, 25. The Forrest Gump star also has a son Colin, 43, and daughter Elizabeth Ann, 38, from a previous relationship.

Although Chet assured the public that 'I love my parents' and 'wouldn't want any different parents,' he confessed having a famous family is 'a double-edged sword.'

He said many people had 'contempt' for him as a movie star's child, and while trying to navigate the 's-talking' and the 'd-riders,' he lacked 'a strong male role model' who could have told him: Hey, bro, f*** these people. They are just jealous of you.

Arizona State Representative Mark Finchem Talks About Resolution To Decertify AZ, Subpoena By Jan. 6 Committee: “This Is Classic Saul Alinsky.”

Last week, Arizona State Representative Mark Finchem introduced a resolution to decertify three compromised 2020 county elections in Arizona after multiple investigations statewide discovered elections law violations and hundreds of thousands of ballot discrepancies.

Immediately, Finchem faced pushback from Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers who will make the next decision on hearing this historic resolution.

Arizona citizens who want to fix 2020 must contact Arizona legislators and House Speaker Bowers to strongly encourage decertification.

Days after this major move to decertify Arizona, the January 6 committee issued subpoenas to Rep. Mark Finchem and AZGOP Chairwoman Kelli Ward. This is just another deep state intimidation tactic.

The Gateway Pundit correspondent Jordan Conradson spoke to Rep. Finchem earlier for an update.

Conradson: So, have you received any more support from legislators on your resolution to decertify Arizona’s fraudulent election?

Finchem: There are a few more senators and representatives who, I think they’ve seen the proof. They’ve seen the legal argument. They see the jurisprudence. They see that the Supreme Court itself has said, Oh, no, you can do this. I think that they’re beginning to get to that place where they may be a little bit more comfortable. It’s a big move. I mean, this is a historic thing.

Conradson: Last time we spoke, you challenged Speaker Bowers’ legal team to a little bit of a debate on the constitutionality of your resolution. Can you tell us about that?

Finchem: I guess it wasn’t a formal challenge. It was more of, you know, thinking out loud. Perhaps it would be great for the people because this is a passionate issue, not just here in Arizona but across the country. And if we were to have a pro-con debate between legal scholars, people who know what they’re talking about with the Constitution, and lawyers who agree with the legal theory that I presented or disagree with the legal theory I presented, I would like to see those two groups onstage participating in a debate. This is not a debate between Mark Finchem and the Speaker of the House. That’s not what I’m calling for at all. I wrote the legal analysis memo, presented that with the merits of the case along with evidence to the Speaker’s office. Now where it goes from there, he’s the Speaker of the House.

You catch somebody stealing something, you don’t let them keep what they stole. You take it back, and essentially that’s what we’re advocating for. Now, to your question about a debate. I’ve not seen anybody present a strong case that says the legislature doesn’t have this authority. So it might be a moot issue. But I would still like to give the people a glimpse of what the discussion is, and I think the best way to do that is to get both pro and con on stage in front of the people for a respectful debate, right?
