Jean-Luc Brunel: Ex-Epstein associate found dead in French jail

Brunel, in his mid-70s, was under investigation for the rape and trafficking of minors for sexual exploitation.

A French modelling agent who was close to disgraced US financier Jeffrey Epstein was found dead on Saturday in his prison cell in Paris, where he was being held in an investigation into the rape of minors and trafficking of minors for sexual exploitation, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office.

A source close to the investigation speaking on the condition of anonymity told the AFP news agency that Jean-Luc Brunel had been found hanged but this was not confirmed by prosecutors.

Paris police are investigating the death of the agent, Brunel, the prosecutor’s office said.

Brunel was detained at Paris’s Charles de Gaulle Airport in 2020 as part of a broad French probe unleashed by sex-trafficking charges in the US against Epstein. In December, he was charged with the rape of minor girls.

Epstein died by suicide in 2019 in a Manhattan jail while awaiting trial.

“His tragedy is that of a 75-year-old man crushed by a media-judicial system, about which there will now be time to ask questions,” his lawyers, Mathias Chichportich, Marianne Abgrall and Christophe Ingrain said in a statement.

“Jean-Luc Brunel had always maintained his innocence and had intensified his efforts to prove it,” it said, adding that his apparent suicide death was “not guided by guilt but a profound sense of injustice”.

A frequent companion of Epstein, Brunel was considered central to the French investigation into the alleged sexual exploitation of women and girls by the US financier and his circle. Epstein traveled often to France and had apartments in Paris.

Multiple women have identified themselves as victims and spoken to police since the French probe was opened in 2019.

Anne-Claire Le Jeune, lawyer for the plaintiffs, expressed “frustration and bitterness over not being able to obtain justice, just as for the victims of Epstein”.

“It took so much courage to be able to speak up, to be heard by the police and the investigating judges. It’s quite terrible for the victims,” she said.

She added that the victims have the “feeling that he (Brunel) is leaving behind a number of secrets”.

Earlier this week, The United Kingdom’s Prince Andrew agreed to settle a case in which he was accused of sexually abusing a 17-year-old girl trafficked to him by Epstein.

The deal, in which Andrew agreed to make a substantial donation to his accuser’s charity, avoids a trial.

Gates added, “there’s no doubt that the misinformation, enhanced vaccine hesitancy and that maps to hundreds of 1000s of deaths. There’s no doubt that the idea that, you know, we need the freedom not to wear a mask, you know, and that that’s some, you know, thing that you’ve got to show that in many cases that led to spreading the disease into locations where elderly people had very high death rates.”

Gates appeared to scoff at the arguments made by politicians and individuals opposed to mask mandates, before jokingly comparing grievances against compulsory masking to those against wearing pants in public.

Ukraine Defense Chief Says "Low Probability" Of Major Conflict With Russia, Contradicting Biden

Ukraine Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov told parliament on Friday that there is a low probability of any major escalation with Russia. He added that Ukraine intelligence sees every move made in the area.

Tensions at the Russia-Ukraine border have been ongoing, with several Western nations repeatedly predicting a huge war. Ukraine has chided those nations for causing a panic.

"Our intelligence sees every move that could pose a potential threat to Ukraine. We estimate the probability of a large-scale escalation as low," Reznikov said.

The timing of the statement is interesting given that just the day prior, President Joe Biden stuck by the White House assessment that an invasion is imminent.

"We have reason to believe they are engaged in a false flag operation to have an excuse to go in," Biden told reporters at the White House on Thursday. "Every indication we have is they're prepared to go into Ukraine and attack Ukraine."

The fact that Ukraine's defense chief, who is certainly closer to the situation than anyone at the White House, directly contradicted Biden's words is no minor thing.

Predictions of such a conflict go back years, and while previous Ukraine officials had similar pessimism about it, more recently officials see a lot more chance for diplomacy.

Israel’s security forces have drawn condemnation after video surfaced of soldiers setting a military attack dog on a Palestinian man who appeared to have surrendered during a night-time arrest last week. The footage shows the dog run toward and jump at the man, who is holding his hands up behind his head.

According to Haaretz, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that the incident occurred in the West Bank city of Al-Bireh near Ramallah last Monday. The paper noted that the Palestinian Authority’s prisoners commission had identified the detainee as Malik Maala, a 19-year-old who works at one of the factories in the city’s industrial area.

In the minute-long clip, which was released on Wednesday, soldiers are seen subduing and arresting Maala after the dog attack. The IDF told Haaretz that the dog had been muzzled and was only released to scare him. The soldiers had reportedly surrounded the compound and warned Maala to come out and surrender prior to the attack.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Denis Monastyrsky, along with a group of lawmakers and 25 foreign journalists, has come under fire in Donbass, his advisor said on Saturday.

The alleged incident took place near the village of Novoluganskoe in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic.

“The Minister of Internal Affairs Denis Monastyrsky, a group of MPs, as well as 25 foreign journalists have just been shelled,” advisor Anton Gerashchenko wrote on Facebook.

“Miraculously, no one was hurt,” Gerashchenko said, adding that reporters from CNN, Fox News, the Washington Post, the New York Times, and Voice of America had the chance to see for themselves “who was actually preparing for an attack on peaceful Ukraine.”

Ukraine has been accusing Russia of seeking to create a pretext for an invasion. Moscow has categorically denied the allegations. Missing TV actress found dead in Los Angeles, according to LAPD

A TV actress who went missing in Los Angeles days ago was found dead on Friday morning, police said.

Lindsey Pearlman, 43, whose credits include a recurring role on ABC’s “General Hospital,” vanished February 13 in the 1600 block of North Mariposa Avenue, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

She “failed to return home and has not been seen or heard from since,” cops said Wednesday, in asking the public’s help to locate her.

Police said that at around 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Hollywood Area officers found Pearlman’s body near Franklin Avenue and North Sierra Bonita Avenue while responding to a radio call for a death investigation.

Pearlman’s official cause of death has not yet been determined, pending an autopsy.

The Chicago native has appeared in several TV series, including NBC’s “Chicago Justice” and “The Ms. Pat Show” from BET+. She also had roles in Fox’s “Empire” and Amazon’s “Sneaky Pete.”

Japan Reserves The Right To Pre-Emptive Airstrikes On Enemy Bases: Defense Minister

Japan’s defense minister Nobuo Kishi said Wednesday that he would not rule out the option to conduct pre-emptive airstrikes on enemy bases because the country has reserved the right to do so.

During a parliamentary lower house budget panel hearing, Kishi said that such attacks “would fall within the scope of self-defense,” although it would be the last resort to protect Japan from inbound missiles, Nikkei Asia reported.

However, he noted that certain conditions must be met in order for an airstrike against enemy bases to be authorized under the self-defense policy, which includes limiting the use of force to only what is necessary to complete the mission.

Kishi also noted that Japan “will not possess military capabilities that by themselves would annihilate an opponent,” such as intercontinental ballistic missiles or long-range strategic bombers.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said in a subsequent press conference on Wednesday that Kishi’s intent was that “no option will be ruled out if it falls within the scope of the constitution and international law.”

Acquiring enemy base attack capability has been a contentious issue in Japan as it could undermine the country’s post-war pacifist constitution, which outlaws war as a means to settle international disputes.

Kishi’s remarks appear to be a warning to North Korea, which conducted its seventh missile test last month, one of which included a Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missile.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida had previously stated in December that Japan would consider “all options” to bolster the country’s defense posture, including the acquisition of “enemy base attack capability.”

“We will realistically examine all options, including possessing what is called enemy base attack capability, without excluding any possibilities, and, with a sense of speed, fundamentally reinforce our defense capabilities,” Kishida said.

Kishida also spoke of the country’s willingness to build “constructive and stable relations” with China while urging China to “act responsibly,” adding that he would continue to urge Pyongyang “to make appropriate responses strongly.”

Japan on Tuesday signed a letter of arrangement with the United Kingdom to pursue cooperative research on a “world-leading” fighter jet sensor beginning in April.

The project, known as Jaguar, will be designed to allow the armed forces to better detect “future threats from air, land, and sea quickly” and “denying surveillance technology” operated by their adversaries.

The process of developing the system would take around five years, involving input from aerospace company Leonardo UK and its counterpart in the Japanese industry, the British Defense Ministry said. Two technology demonstrators will be built as part of the project, with one going to each country.

Chinese man lured by fake job ad became ‘blood slave’ in Cambodia

A Chinese man was kidnapped and held captive for months as a “blood slave” in Cambodia after being lured by a fake job ad, according to the South China Morning Post.

The man, identified only by his surname Li, managed to escape earlier this month with the help of a member of the gang in the city of Sihanoukville that was holding him captive. He is currently being treated in a hospital and reportedly in stable condition.

Since August 2021, the gang reportedly took 27 ounces of blood each month from the 31-year-old. The blood was believed to be sold to private buyers.

Li’s arms were badly bruised and covered with needle marks when he was admitted to the hospital last week.

Li, who had worked as a security guard in Shenzhen and Beijing, told reporters he refused to participate in the gang’s fraud scheme and after learning he was an orphan and couldn’t be used for a ransom, they opted to use him as a “blood slave.”

He said at least 7 other men were detained in the same room with him. Li said that because he has the universal blood type O negative, the gang took more blood from him than other men.

He said the person who initially tested his blood quipped that his blood type was “quite valuable.”

He also said his captors threatened to sell him to illegal organ harvesters if he didn’t give them his blood.

After being lured by the fake job ad, Li said he was held at gunpoint and taken across the China-Vietnam border where he was sold to the Cambodian gang running the fraud scheme for $18,500.

The Chinese embassy in Cambodia said that it has asked Cambodian police to prioritize the case, according to reports. The embassy also sent staff to visit Li in the hospital.

Dozens of potentially dangerous Afghans brought to US, most can’t be found: Pentagon audit

A new Department of Defense audit of the U.S. military-led civilian evacuation from Afghanistan last summer found that dozens of potentially dangerous Afghan individuals were brought to the U.S. and now most of them can’t be found.

In an audit report published Tuesday and publicly released Thursday, the Department of Defense’s Inspector General said the DoD’s National Ground Intelligence Center (NGIC) had identified “50 Afghan personnel in the United States with information in DoD records that would indicate potentially significant security concerns.”

Adding to the security concern, most of those Afghan individuals who have been flagged for security concerns can no longer be found after being brought to the U.S. The inspector general said NGIC tried to track down 31 such Afghan individuals who were linked to derogatory security information. “Of those 31, only 3 could be located.”

The inspector general said NGIC reached out DoD and U.S. Government personnel who were located at, or who had oversight of all temporary housing facilities for individuals relocated in the U.S. During the evacuation from Kabul, Afghan evacuees were brought to eight different DoD installations, including Fort Bliss, Texas; Joint Base McGuire‑Dix‑Lakehurst, New Jersey; Fort McCoy, Wisconsin; Camp Atterbury, Indiana; Fort Pickett, Virginia; Fort Lee, Virginia; Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia; and Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico.

Upon realizing that most of the flagged Afghan evacuees could not be located, the inspector general report states NGIC personnel used “informal reporting procedures” to notify the DoD and other U.S. government agencies of the security risks. The inspector general warned that such informal procedures do not ensure consistent and timely reporting.

“Not being able to locate Afghan evacuees with derogatory information quickly and accurately could pose a security risk to the United States,” the report states. “In addition, the U.S. Government could mistakenly grant ineligible Afghan evacuees with derogatory information from the DoD [Automated Biometric Identification System] database [special immigrant visa] or parolee status.”

The lapse in vetting may be due in part to NGIC personnel not having had access to all DoD data prior to Afghan evacuees arriving in the U.S. For example, evacuees were not vetted with the National Counter‑Terrorism Center (NCTC). The agreements NGIC has with some foreign partners also prohibit them from sharing some data with non-DoD agencies that could have helped them review the data.

NGIC developed a workaround to compare data with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), but the agreement between the NGIC and the DoD expired in December before all Afghan evacuees could be fully reviewed.

Scotland Stops Releasing Death and Hospitalisation Figures by Vax Status, Says Anti-Vaxers Misusing Them

Scottish health officials will no longer release figures on Covid deaths and hospitalisations by vaccination status as it does now, complaining that anti-vaxers are misusing the data.

Public Health Scotland (PHS), the Scottish equivalent of the UK Health Security Agency (formerly Public Health England) believes that “[t]he case rates, hospitalisation rates, the death rates are very simple statistics” and that anti-vaxers are misreading them “inappropriately and sometimes wilfully”.

“What is happening is people are looking at those simple data and trying to make inferences about the vaccination, whether the vaccines work, inappropriately and sometimes wilfully,” one technocrat at the Special National Health Service (NHS) Health Board complained to the Scottish press.

“There are so many caveats and they just pull certain figures out that should not be used,” they added, saying that what they would now be doing is “a lot more on the vaccine effectiveness side and try[ing to] make people understand how effective the vaccine is.”

Another official explained that, in Public Health Scotland’s view, “[t]he main important point around all of the analysis is we understand whether the vaccines are working against catching it and against getting severe Covid, and that’s where the vaccine effectiveness studies come in which are a completely different methodology.”

Unlike the “very simple statistics” on case rates, hospitalisations, and deaths among the vaccinated and unvaccinated, the vaccine effectiveness studies they will now be emphasising “use modelling, we compare people who have tested negative to those who have tested positive and match them on their underlining co-morbidities.”

“It’s a completely different method which is much more robust and that’s what we want people to focus on,” they insisted.

Scotland has a broad degree of autonomy within the United Kingdom dating back to the Acts of Union of 1707, which was strengthened considerably by Tony Blair’s Labour government in the 1990s with devolution.

Australians who experienced adverse reactions to Covid-19 vaccines have started receiving compensation, local media reported on Wednesday, though the number of people applying to the scheme is far lower than expected.

Figures from Australia’s Health Department show that less than 10% of the more than 10,000 people who registered their interest in the government scheme before December have submitted claims.

The no-fault indemnity schemegrants people a one-off payment ranging from AU$1,000 (US$720) to AU$20,000 (US$14,400) for lost wages or other expenses if they suffered bad reactions to Covid-19 vaccines.

Coast Guard shows what $1 billion of cocaine and marijuana looks like

The Coast Guard and other federal officials showed off more than a billion dollars’ worth of cocaine and marijuana Thursday that was confiscated from smugglers during several recent operations in the Pacific Ocean and more nearby in the Caribbean Sea.

The agency seized 54,500 pounds of cocaine and 15,800 pounds of marijuana, officials said Thursday at a briefing at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. The total street value is estimated to be $1.06 billion, the Coast Guard said.

A haul that large means “a lot of sad walks to doors that will never have to occur,” said South Florida Democrat Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, referring to overdose deaths that might be prevented with the drugs off the street.

The congresswoman made the remarks at the media briefing and was joined by other officials in front of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter James, which was docked at Port Everglades.

It wasn’t the Coast Guard’s largest seizure, but it was for the James, a “national security cutter,” which is the largest and most technologically advanced type of ship the service deploys.

The seizure also comes on the heels of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting that fatal drug overdoses in the country topped more than 100,000 annually from April 2020 to April 2021 — up almost 30% from the previous 12-month time frame. The number reflects an increase in cocaine deaths as well.

“Our country is losing an American every five minutes around the clock,” Rahul Gupta, director of the White House’s Office of National Drug Control Policy, said at the news conference.

The drugs brought in by the James were the result of operations off the Eastern Pacific and Caribbean involving four other cutters, the U.S. Navy and the Royal Netherlands Navy, said Adm. Karl Schultz, commandant of the Coast Guard.

Officials have not commented on how many people were arrested in connection with the drugs, but about 30 people have been indicted in U.S. Southern District of Florida Court since Wednesday on charges related to distributing or conspiracy to distribute drugs on a vessel “subject to the jurisdiction of the United States.” That is the typical charge or charges pressed against people caught smuggling drugs by boat by the Coast Guard.

Capt. Todd Vance, commander of the James, explained Thursday that a typical interdiction first involves a Coast Guard helicopter spotting a “go-fast” or speedboat in the water. A cutter then launches a smaller patrol boat crewed by a team that will board the speedboat.

Vance said that it’s not just the drugs that are collected as evidence. He said things like “matchbook covers, pieces of paper and satellite phones” are also seized that help other branches of the government, including the Department of Justice, put together cases targeting the higher echelon of the transnational organizations trafficking the drugs.

Often, as happened at least once during the James’ most recent deployment, the speedboats don’t stop right away after seeing they’re being pursued. In those instances, the Coast Guard will fire warning shots in the go-fasts’ direction, Vance said.

“If the vessels don’t compel and comply when we ask them to stop, there are some steps that we take to allow them to the opportunity to abide by our task and direction,” Vance said. “If that does not happen, we employ warning shots. A lot of times the targets decide to comply at that point, knowing that we have a full continuum of options after that.”

Lebanese security agencies thwarted the smuggling of 700,000 Captagon pills to Saudi Arabia, Anadolu Agency reported Lebanese Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi disclosing on Friday.

Captagon is a type of amphetamine-style stimulant fenethylline manufactured for illegal recreational use, mostly in Lebanon and Syria.

Mawlawi posted on Twitter: "A new achievement for the intelligence department was recorded as 700,000 Captagon pills were seized before being shipped to Saudi Arabia."

He also said that the security agencies intercepted three other attempts to smuggle Captagon to Saudi Arabia in one week.

Smuggling drugs to Saudi Arabia was one of the reasons that led to strained relations between Lebanon and the main Gulf state.

Last month, Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Ahmad Nasser Al-Sabah proposed an initiative to rebuild confidence between Lebanon and the Gulf States.

The proposal included a term related to tightening measures against drug smuggling from Lebanon to the Gulf states.

TASS reports that another Ukrainian shell hit a residential house in a farmstead in the Mityakinsky rural settlement in Rostov Region on the border with Ukraine. There were no casualties, but the roof of the house was damaged, the Tarasovsky district administration told TASS.

The administration specified that the incident happened in the village of Patronovka. Before that, shells exploded in the village of Mityakinskaya and the village of Manatskoye.

LNR officials report that they discovered an explosive device under a bridge on a highway used to evacuate people to the Russian Federation in buses.

Massive shelling of DNR and LNR territories continues. Hundreds of shells have been fired in recent hours. Heavy firefights are taking place at several locations on the contact line.

The Ukrainian government is undertaking all possible steps to provoke retaliatory actions from Russia. 63 arrested in Stanislaus County during weekend ‘Operation Reclaim and Rebuild’

Stanislaus County law enforcement agencies arrested 63 people during a two-day operation focused on combating prostitution, the Sheriff’s Office said.

“It’s all with the intention of keeping Stanislaus County and its community safe,” Sgt. Luke Schwartz said.

Last Friday and Saturday, the agencies participated in “Operation Reclaim and Rebuild,” categorized by agencies as a statewide human trafficking effort.

Most of the arrests were misdemeanor prostitution-related offenses, Schwartz said, including people who were either buying or selling sex. There were also some felony weapons charges and one felony case involving someone who allegedly believed they were meeting a minor for sex.

In addition to the arrests, the operation also worked to refer people to community resources such as Haven Women’s Center and the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office victim services.

Five people were referred to victim services, and Child Protective Services handled two cases. Schwartz said another 13 were “rescued,” which included those who had been registered as missing persons.

“Once we have these encounters, we try to point these folks in the right direction and get the folks the tools they need to turn their lives around,” Schwartz said.

Schwartz said the operation was considered human trafficking because of the ways sex workers can be taken advantage of or face violence or other forms of coercion. He did not specify what the circumstances were behind these arrests.

Oakdale, Newman, Turlock and Modesto Police Departments participated in the operation alongside the sheriff’s office, Child Protective Services, California Department of Justice and other related groups.

“This is a complex societal problem, and it’s not something just the sheriff’s office can take on itself, so we want to thank the law enforcement realm and the social services realm,” Schwartz said.

What we know about the 2 Sioux Falls police officers arrested on child porn charges

Two Sioux Falls police officers are facing child pornography charges after both were arrested within a week of each other this month.

The first was Luke John Schauer, 28, who was charged federally with attempted production of child pornography and transfer of obscene materials to minors, according to court documents. He was arrested Feb. 8 and entered a plea of not guilty during his court hearing the next day at the federal courthouse in Sioux Falls.

The second was Matthew Alan Jock, 23, who was arrested Wednesday and charged with five counts of possession, manufacturing and distribution of child porn, according to court documents. Schauer has since bonded out of jail while Jock remains in custody at the Minnehaha County Jail on a $25,000 cash-only bond.

The two arrests are being investigated individually. Schauer's charges are in federal court while Jock's are out of Lincoln County at the state level.

The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is handling Jock's case while an FBI sting was the reason Schauer is being charged.

Jock's charges stem from an investigation from the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation after they received a tip on Jan. 14 from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

The tip was regarding a Kik Messenger user account that contained files suspected of depicting child porn, according to court documents.

OSBI facing unprecedented child sex crimes cases while investigator pay slumps

I have been a member of the Board of Commissioners for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation for three years and now serve as the chairman. I have been witness to the OSBI’s dedication and commitment to Oklahoma.

Nowhere in state government has there been such a dramatic revival of a state agency’s operational effectiveness, culture and morale than at the OSBI. This renaissance is the result of the implementation of “The OSBI’s 2025 Strategy for Excellence,” a comprehensive roadmap focused on the redesign and enhancement of the bureau’s ability to provide unmatched investigative services.

The Office of Management and Enterprise Services’ Climate Surveys indicate a measure of success, where the OSBI tops the public safety arena and among all state agencies with more than 50 personnel in the 2021 survey. Today, the OSBI truly demonstrates that dollars spent on its effort in combating major crimes are dollars well spent.

So why would the OSBI be asking for a new infusion of personnel and a major pay raise? They answered these two questions during recent budget presentations in the Oklahoma House and Senate.

First is an unprecedented explosion of internet crimes committed against our children. There has been a 500% increase in tips regarding child pornography and molestation to the OSBI’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force over the last few years.

These cases are not simple cases of sexting between teenagers.

These are cases of the violent rape or molestation of a child and predators taking pictures of this crime and sharing them on internet platforms for the gratification of other child sexual predators.

The rate to which these tips are flooding into the OSBI has become overwhelming for the bureau and the 86 affiliate agencies serving on that task force.

Nearly every time Oklahomans become aware of child predator arrests, those apprehensions are associated with the OSBI’s task force. Today each of the OSBI’s assigned agents is carrying more than 40 cases, which is far too many for an agent to quickly investigate.

The affiliated agencies of the OSBI’s task force also are stressed beyond capacity to deal with this growing crisis. Compounding this problem is the technology aspect of investigating and dealing with rapid advancements in computer and cellphone technology.

Every law enforcement agency struggles keeping up with the changes and expertise needed to solve these cases. The bottom line is that resources to properly affect this problem are expensive and ever changing.

The trauma from these crimes is exceptionally damaging to child victims with lifetime aftereffects.

The bureau has developed a plan to address this growing problem with an estimated 25 new personnel and a nontraditional investigative approach to these cases. The innovative approach will dramatically improve the capabilities of the OSBI and partner agencies in rescuing these children from child predators by speeding up these investigations.

Trucker protest in Ottawa escalates as police clash with Freedom Convoy demonstrators, 150 arrested as authorities retake Parliament Hill area

The Freedom Convoy protests have been happening in Ottawa for three weeks, but clashes between law enforcement and demonstrators escalated on Friday and into Saturday.

The Ottawa Police Department said on Friday, "Protesters are assaulting officers, have attempted to remove officer’s weapons. All means of de-escalation have been used to move forward in our goal of returning Ottawa to its normalcy."

The Ottawa Police added, "The protesters continued their assaultive behavior with the police line, to prevent an escalation or further injury, mounted officers were sent in to create critical space between the police line and protesters. This is done to create a safe distance."

However, mounted police charged into a crowd of demonstrators on Friday, knocking down at least two people, including an elderly woman on a mobility scooter.

Early Friday night, the Ottawa Police announced that it had arrested over 100 people and towed 21 vehicles.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said on Friday, "There are indications we are now starting to see progress."

Interim Ottawa Police Chief Steve Bell added, "We're in control of the situation on the ground and continue to push forward to clear our streets. We will work day and night until this is completed."

On Saturday morning, the Ottawa Police said its officers would be using helmets and batons.
