"Boris Johnson has accused Vladimir Putin of "plainly" breaking international law after the the Russian President vowed to recognise two breakaway republics. Speaking at a Downing Street press conference, the Prime Minister said the move was an “ill omen” and a “dark sign” from Moscow. The PM ended the press conference by saying he would speak to Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky “and offer him the support of the United Kingdom”.
America’s ambassador to the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, Michael Carpenter, said such a move would be “deplorable and condemnable”. Speaking before the dramatic announcement from Mr Putin, he warned: "If carried out, this would again result in the upending of the rules based international order, under the threat of force.”
