Massive fire, explosion destroys apartment building and 2 popular businesses in Albany Park

CHICAGO — Two businesses and an apartment building were destroyed following a massive fire early Monday in Albany Park.

The fire started around 3:45 a.m. Monday at an apartment building at Montrose Avenue and Richmond Street. Officials said the fire spread quickly to two buildings that house “The Ultimate Ninja” and the “Twisted Hippo Brewery.” One of the walls of the brewery collapsed.

The fire burned for several hours as around 150 firefighters battled it.

Neighbors report they heard at least eight explosions due to the fire. All of the residents of the apartment building were able to escape.

A 60-year-old man was transported to Swedish Hospital for smoke inhalation, according to fire officials. No other transports or injuries have been reported at this time.

The buildings involved are completely destroyed. CFD said the fire may have started on the top floor of the apartment building and then spread to the businesses.

Twisted Hippo owner Marilee Rutherford was devastated by the sight of her business burning.

“It’s a little unreal, it’s hard, it’s going to be hard,” Rutherford said. “But we’re lucky to have had it and we will see how we move forward.”

Neighbors are hoping the businesses can make a comeback. A GoFundMe for Twisted Hippo has raised over $65,000 at this time.

'Hundreds, potentially over 1,000': Extremely rare video games found in Nebraska after 27 years in storage

Updated: 11:40 AM CST Feb 18, 2022

A video game store owner is helping to sort through a collection of rare games.

He tells KETV NewsWatch 7 the selection may be worth millions.

A YouTube video posted by Gameroom, gives just a little preview of a collection video game lovers only dream about.

“Hundreds, potentially over 1,000,” said Gameroom owner, Chris Thompson.

Chris Thompson with the Gameroom, is the face of the collection.

But it's not his and he doesn't have it.

The owners, want to remain anonymous.

It started when the owner came into his Omaha location in September.

“He brought in with him a couple of unique items. He was inquiring about information about these. He had them and he wanted to just know more what the dynamic was, how to value them,” Thompson said.

So, Thompson is helping the owners connect with the right people to preserve the games, learn more information about them, and see how much they're worth.

He can't say much but they've been in storage for 27 years.

“There was a video game store in Nebraska. And it functioned during the mid-90s. And it eventually closes doors and everything that was left, got crated up and went into storage,” Thompson said.

And the collection could potentially be worth millions of dollars.

“Chrono Trigger is the one that's getting the most commentary, Chrono Trigger is a game that a cartridge by itself in average conditions were $200 to $300,” Thompson said.

Valuing everything, won't be an easy task.

“These games are probably going to get hours’ worth of research. I mean, there will probably be a team of people somewhere who do this professionally that will drop everything and get on this at some point,” Thompson said.

As for what the owners will do with the games, Thompson says that's yet to be decided.
