Ukraine 'not seeking war,' but will defend nation, foreign minister says at Pentagon meeting
Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine's minister of foreign affairs, appeared at the Pentagon alongside U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's most recent actions in eastern Ukraine are meant not to recognize new regions, but to dismantle the entire country, a top Ukrainian official said Tuesday at the Pentagon.
"Yesterday's address by President Putin was not about the recognition of Donetsk and Luhansk; it was about the destruction of the Ukrainian statehood," said Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine's minister of foreign affairs.
Kulena made his comments while appearing alongside U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, in the wake of Russia sending troops into the would-be breakaway regions of Donetsk and Luhansk. Putin sent in the troops ostensibly on a "peacekeeping" mission, shortly after announcing that Russia recognized the regions as independent states.
The move to recognize the two regions threatens international stability on many levels, Austin indicated.
"That violates international law and Russia's own international commitments, and it directly undermines Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity," Austin said.
Kulena noted that he is visiting the United States as part of a diplomatic mission.
"My message is simple," he said. "A strong Ukraine is the best deterrence of Russia. And we are a peaceful nation. We never attacked anyone. We are not seeking war. We want to find solutions through diplomacy."
But, he added, " if the war is imposed on us by President Putin, we will be defending ourselves and we will be more than grateful for all the assistance that you can provide to us in that regard."

This morning, the FT summarized well the problem facing Europe as it decides whether to unleash draconian sanctions on Russia:
"Business magazine Wirtschaftswoche encapsulated the problem with a recent cover: Vladimir Putin controls Germany the way a dealer controls a junkie. Natural gas is the drug of choice.
The shrewdness of Putin’s strategy is clear now Russian tanks are rolling. Effective sanctions would ban Russian energy exports, or payments for them via the international banking system. But that severe blow to Russia’s resource-dependent economy would badly hurt Germans. The energy policy errors of their leaders are woefully apparent.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz has only halted a second pipeline, Nord Stream 2, now that Russia is invading eastern Ukraine. This would have doubled the capacity of imports to 110bn cubic metres.
The first Nord Stream pipeline system already supplies two-thirds of Germany’s imported energy. Half Germany’s 40m households keep warm using natural gas, 97 per cent of it from overseas.
Needless to say, the underlying logic behind this strategy is not lost on the Russians, and this morning none other than Putin's right hand man Dmitry Medvedev trolled the west, tweeting that "German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has issued an order to halt the process of certifying the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline" and gloating: "welcome to the brave new world where Europeans are very soon going to pay €2.000 for 1.000 cubic meters of natural gas!"
In immediate response, western media asked rhetorically "if such tweets will strengthen Europe's resolve to cut its dependence on gas and oil - two resources that it lacks and constrain its `strategic autonomy' aspirations" adding sarcastically that "some EU governments have been blaming renewables for gas prices" (and as even Goldman has noted recently, they are 100% correct to blame renewables for gas prices).

Russia Presides over U.N. Security Council Meeting on Russian Aggression
Ukraine requested an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council (UNSC) on Monday night in response to Russia’s military incursion.
The rotating presidency of the UNSC happens to be held by Russia at the moment.
At the meeting, the U.S. denounced ceasefire violations by Russian-supported separatists in eastern Ukraine and warned other members, “The risk of major conflict is real and needs to be prevented at all costs.”
U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said Russia was committing “a clear violation of international law” and seeking a “pretext” to push further into Ukraine and destabilize the entire region. She noted Putin’s claim of all former Russian Imperial territories could be an excuse to invade most of Eastern Europe, from Estonia to Finland.
“Russia’s clear attack on Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity is unprovoked. It is an attack on Ukraine’s status as a U.N. Member State, it violates a basic principle of international law, and it defies our Charter,” she said.
“Already, Russian proxies dramatically increased shelling and artillery fire over the weekend, killing Ukrainian civilians and soldiers. If Russia invades Ukraine even further, we will see a devastating loss of life. Unimaginable suffering. Millions of displaced people will create a refugee crisis across Europe,” she warned.

An Oakland, California, high school is reportedly utilizing what's referred to as the "The Transition Closet" — a makeshift wardrobe for students to change when they arrive at school if they aren't comfortable telling their parents about their apparent gender dysphoria.

According to a report from the Post Millennial, the program first launched at a Fayetteville, Arkansas, church and was designed to "let trans-identified youth circumvent their parents and socially transition without their knowledge."
In a Facebook statement, the Transition Closet wrote, "We are extremely excited to begin our journey in working with Fremont Highschool of Oakland California, alongside our favorite teacher of TikTok @justaqueerteacher."
