There's not just one reason this is happening. There are many reasons. Also, yes, some stats missing:
-
How many children are found and returned "home"?
-
How many of those in #1 are in abusive situations (it's not always sexual) and are repeats?
-
How many are reported missing but actually weren't (went to live with another relative and there's a vindictive guardian involved)?
-
How many are put into the state's care?
-
How many are runaways that never return?
-
How many are preyed upon and meet the worst fate?
-
How many go unreported?
Anyone can say "Just one is too many", and all would agree. It's best to not ignore the complexity of the issues, though. Being overly sensational about one specific issue turns people off. Having an open and honest conversation about the many reasons these things happen opens the dialogue to address how our society is deficient in not just one area but many.
