Ukrainian troops 'abandoning positions,' Russia claims

Ukrainian soldiers are abandoning their positions in the face of a Russian offensive, Moscow has asserted, while also claiming that its armed forces are not striking cities and pose "no threat" to civilians.

In a statement issued on Thursday morning, defense officials said that “intelligence shows that units of the Ukrainian army and servicemen are leaving their posts en masse, laying down their weapons.” No direct evidence has been presented to substantiate the statement.

According to the release, “Ukrainian Armed Forces positions that have laid down their weapons are not being attacked. The Russian armed forces are not striking Ukrainian cities. There is no threat to the civilian population.” Moscow says a number of military targets, including airfields, defense installations and airplanes have been hit by “high-precision weapons” as part of a “special operation” ordered by President Vladimir Putin.

However, Kiev's foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, has issued a statement in which he declared that Moscow "has just launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine." According to him, "this is a war of aggression. Ukraine will defend itself and will win," he insisted. "The world can and must stop Putin. The time to act is now."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has declared martial law in the country, urging citizens to stay calm and stay at home.

Foreign leaders have condemned Moscow’s actions, with US President Joe Biden saying that Russia had declared a “premeditated war” that would lead to “catastrophic loss of life and human suffering.”

Russia closes airspace as Moscow confirms strikes against Ukraine

Moscow suspends flights from 12 airports in the south of the country

Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency has suspended all flights to and from 12 airports in the south of the country. The move comes after Moscow revealed that it had launched airstrikes in Ukraine.

“The airports temporarily suspended are Rostov (Platov), Krasnodar (Pashkovsky), Anapa (Vityazevo), Gelendzhik, Elista, Stavropol, Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, Voronezh, and Simferopol,” the agency reported on its official website, also noting that people should avoid going to the airports. The restriction will remain in place until March 2, 2022.

Russia has asserted that it is targeting “military infrastructure, air defense facilities, military airfields, and aviation [in Ukraine],” with the Defense Ministry claiming that there is no threat to the civilian population.

Early on Thursday morning, in a televised address to the nation, Putin announced that Russia would begin launching a special military operation in Ukraine. The goal of the action, according to the Kremlin, is “to protect the people [of Donbass] who have been tortured for eight years by the Ukrainian regime.”

Putin also called for the complete “demilitarization” and “denazification” of Ukraine, and made a pledge to prosecute those who were involved in “numerous bloody crimes against civilians.” The Russian leader called on Ukrainian soldiers “to put down arms immediately” so they could return home to their families.

Moscow’s decision to enter Ukraine followed an official request from the Donetsk (DPR) and Lugansk (DPR) People’s Republics for “help in repelling the Ukrainian military aggression.”

Moscow: Ukraine Uses Provocations to Accuse Russia of 'Disproportionate Strikes' to Scare Civilians

Russia declared a special operation in the Donbass region aimed at defending the DPR and LPR from attacks by the Ukrainian military that have been taking place for over a week.

Ukraine's Security Services are preparing provocations similar to those practiced by the group White Helmets, Russian Defence Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said. According to him, Kiev plans to shoot staged videos claiming to show mass casualties among Ukrainian civilians.

"Their goal is to accuse Russia of allegedly conducting non-selective and disproportionate strikes, and to intimidate the civilian population, as well as broadcast [these videos] on Western TV channels", Konashenkov said.

The spokesman echoed an earlier statement by the Defence Ministry that the Russian forces deployed on the territory of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR) are not carrying out strikes on Ukrainian cities. Konashenkov stressed that there was no threat to Ukraine's civilian population.

Russia's Special Operation in Donbass

The statement follows the start of the special operation by the Russian armed forces in the Donbass region ordered early this morning by President Vladimir Putin after a request from the DPR and LPR.

In his televised address, Putin stated that the situation in Donbass, which he has repeatedly described as "genocide", required Russia's intervention. He added that all of the responsibility for the bloodshed lies on the shoulders of the Ukrainian leadership and called on the country's military to refuse to follow Kiev's criminal orders, lay down their weapons, and go home peacefully.

Leaders of the NATO countries condemned Moscow's decision to launch the operation, labelling it an "invasion" of Ukraine. They threatened to impose even harsher sanctions than the ones that were invoked following Russia's recognistion of the DPR and LPR's independence on 21 February.
