Prime Minister Scott Morrison says Russia has launched a "brutal" and illegal invasion of Ukraine that will be met with a severe response by Australia and the international community.

"I will call it what it is: the Russian government launched a brutal invasion, unprovoked, on Ukraine and should be condemned for doing so," Mr Morrison said.
The Ukrainian interior ministry said an invasion has begun, after Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly authorised a military operation in Ukraine's Donbas region.
The Russian defence ministry has confirmed missile strikes against Ukrainian military and aviation targets, with reports of explosions in several cities and troops entering Ukrainian territory.
Mr Morrison said Russia was breaching international law and the UN charter by invading Ukraine.
United States President Joe Biden released a statement saying the US and its allies would respond in a "united and decisive" way.
"President Putin has chosen a premeditated war that will bring a catastrophic loss of life and human suffering," Mr Biden said.
"Russia alone is responsible for the death and destruction this attack will bring.
"The world will hold Russia accountable."
Mr Biden said he would meet with his G7 counterparts in the morning before announcing further consequences for Russia.

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese said the invasion marked "a grave moment for humanity".
"This is not just an attack on Ukraine, it is also a contemptuous attack on one of the core principles of the post-World War II order," he said in a statement.
Mr Morrison said Russia's attempts to justify the invasion were unconvincing.
"Vladimir Putin has fabricated a feeble pretext on which to invade. Russia’s disinformation and propaganda has convinced no-one," he said.
More sanctions imposed on Russian individuals
Yesterday, the federal government announced it would join the US, the United Kingdom and others to impose a raft of sanctions on the separatist regions of eastern Ukraine and specific sanctions and travel bans on eight Russian individuals on the nation's security council.
Mr Morrison said sanctions would be extended to another 25 individuals, including army commanders, deputy defence ministers and Russian mercenaries, as well as four entities involved in the development and sale of military technology and weapons.
He said further waves of sanctions were expected, including on the 300 members of Russia's parliament.
"[Sanctions] do have an impact on those individuals, particularly when they're done in concert with other countries," Mr Morrison said.
"That's why I think it's important that all countries engage in these sanctions against these individuals. It sends a very clear message.
"You sanction, support, benefit from this type of violence, then you will be isolated, you will be targeted, your assets will be frozen, you will not be able to go about your life freely."

The Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation (BLMGNF) submitted a statement of its revenue and expenses for the year while applying for tax-exempt, nonprofit status in August 2020.
IRS documents obtained by DailyMail.com show the group blew $12.7million out of the $60million in donations it received following the outcry over George Floyd's death on 'professional fees.'
The costs refer to accountants, lawyers, consultants, and contractors utilized by the organization, which includes the high-powered law firm Hillary Clinton retained for her 2016 presidential campaign - where attorneys bill $750 an hour.
The foundation also planned to spend the same amount on professional fees in 2021, the documents, exclusively obtained by DailyMail.com, show.
The figures come amid heightened scrutiny of the foundation, which famously grew into one of the largest international movements against racial injustice in mid-2020 and is now facing calls for financial transparency.

UK's Johnson Unveils "Largest Ever" Sanctions Package Against Russia
Prime minister Boris Johnson has unveiled what he's calling the "largest ever" package of economic sanctions ever imposed on Russia. Johnson vowed the measures will "hobble" the Russian economy, and though teasing the possibility of "pushing to end" Russia's use of the SWIFT international payment system - it appears this is not actually on the table at this point, though likely being saved to threaten further down the road if Moscow doesn't wind down military operations.
On this point, he spelled out that "nothing is off the table" - while detailing mass asset freezes against all major Russian banks, as well as actions that will in effect bar Russian companies from accessing finance in UK markets.
Further, the new UK measures include "an immediate ban on the export of dual-use civilian and military items to Russia, and a plan to limit the amount that Russian nationals can deposit in U.K. banks," as Bloomberg reports.
Russia's VTB Bank was first out of the gate in saying it's already "prepared" itself for the "harshest" possible scenarios coming out of the West - along the lines of what top political officials have of late described as a 'fortress Russia' strategy.
While stopping short of levying punitive actions against Putin himself, which the Russian leader previously said would be an 'act of war' - the UK measures go after his 'inner circle' and other influential Russian elites, meant also to impact oligarchs who typically spend time in Britain:
Individual sanctions will be imposed on over 100 individuals, entities and subsidiaries, including Rostec, the country’s biggest defence company, which exports £10bn in arms a year, as well as four other defence companies.
Oligarchs who will be sanctioned include Putin’s former son-in-law Kirill Shamalov, Russia’s youngest billionaire; Denis Bortnikov, the chair of VTB Bank’s management board; and Yury Slyusar, the director of the United Aircraft Corporation. The Russian airline Aeroflot will be banned from landing in the UK.

Ukraine busts ‘human trafficking ring’ that sold BABIES to Chinese ‘single men of certain orientation’
Ukrainian police have raided a private reproductive clinic that has been allegedly “selling babies” to China. While the suspects are accused of “human trafficking,” surrogate motherhood is a legal gray area in Ukraine.
The scandalous case was brought to light by the country’s interior ministry late on Saturday. The police broke up a “human-trafficking” ring that was centered at a private reproductive clinic in Kiev.
Further details on the case were shared by the Deputy Interior Minister Anton Gerashenko on his Facebook page. The ring involved the head of the clinic, her son, as well as two other Ukrainian and three Chinese nationals. They were charged with human trafficking that may lead to 12 years in prison with property
The majority of the clinic’s clients were single Chinese males of “certain orientation,” as Gerashenko put it. While the exact number of trafficked babies remains unknown, at least 140 more Chinese nationals are under investigation, the official added.
The price tag for a single baby was about $50,000. The hefty sum covered artificial insemination of a surrogate mom, legal support and organization of fictive marriages needed to facilitate smuggling children abroad. It’s unclear if the babies’ fathers were the ones who then adopted them.
Five newborn babies, believed to be about to be trafficked, were found by the investigators in private apartments across the Ukrainian capital and placed in maternity hospitals.
While the suspects stand accused of “human trafficking,” there’s a catch – surrogate motherhood is not regulated by any laws in Ukraine and lies in a legal gray zone. As it’s not explicitly prohibited by law, nothing more than a simple contract between a surrogate mom and would-be foster parents is required.

Biden orders 7,000 US troops to Germany amid Ukraine crisis
US president insists the American soldiers won’t fight Russia in Ukraine, but will be backing up NATO allies
The US will deploy some 7,000 troops to Germany, the Pentagon confirmed Thursday as Washington accused Russia of “invading” Ukraine. President Joe Biden has said US troops will not enter Ukraine, and that it will only defend NATO territory.
Biden told reporters that the troops headed overseas were part of the force that was put on elevated alert last month. The Pentagon later clarified that the unit involved is an armored brigade combat team and its support elements.
These troops are on top of the reshuffle of US forces already in Europe that Biden ordered on Tuesday. Some 800 soldiers from Italy were ordered to the Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, while 32 Apache attack helicopters went to Poland and another eight F-35 jets to unspecified bases in Eastern Europe.
US forces “are not going to fight in Ukraine,” Biden told reporters. While Washington supports the government in Kiev, Biden said he will send humanitarian aid to Ukraine, on top of some $600 million in military assistance that has already been provided during his time in the White House.
NATO is also activating response plans and assembling a “high-readiness force” – which reportedly numbers less than 10,000 troops – to be deployed if and when needed, according to the US president, who described the bloc as “more united and more determined than ever.”
Moscow announced early on Thursday that the Russian military would enter Ukraine to “demilitarize and de-nazify” the “regime” in Kiev that has spent eight years waging war on the people of Donbass, refusing to negotiate, and threatening to obtain nuclear weapons. On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale attack on Ukraine, and within a matter of hours, dozens of key military and civilian infrastructures had been bombarded.
Russian troops have captured several areas already, including a military airfield and the Chernobyl nuclear site.
As the invasion intensifies and Russian troops draw nearer, Ukrainian Security Forces are frantically burning documents en masse in anticipation of a full-scale takeover by Putin’s forces.
Several videos emerged online on Thursday of uniformed military personnel quickly heaving stacks and bags of documents into makeshift bonfires outside of a Ukrainian intelligence facility in Kyiv.
It is unknown what is included in the kindling, but it is likely confidential and sensitive documents that Ukraine’s notoriously corrupt government – or any of their business partners (looking at you, Biden crime family) – can afford to let fall into the wrong hands.
And with that, Biden, Soros, and Schwab, all took a sigh of relief.

Joe Biden Vows to Defend NATO with ‘Full Force of American Power’ After Emboldened Vladimir Putin Attacks Ukraine
President Joe Biden announced Thursday he would send more troops to Germany after Russian President Vladimir Putin attacked Ukraine.
“As I made crystal clear, the United States will defend every inch of NATO territory with the full force of American power,” the president said during a speech at the White House reacting to Putin’s decision to attack Ukraine.
Biden warned that Putin could be emboldened after invading Ukraine, despite the United States and Europe responding by leveling economic sanctions on Russia.
The president also warned Americans that Putin’s goals were much bigger than just taking over Ukraine.
“He has much larger ambitions than Ukraine, he wants to in fact reestablish the former Soviet Union. That’s what this is about,” Biden said. “And I think his ambitions are completely contrary to the place where the rest of the world has arrived.”
Biden said the United States would join a NATO summit on Friday to signal solidarity and strengthen the alliance in the face of Putin’s aggression.
“The good news is NATO is more united and more determined than ever,” Biden said, vowing to meet the Article 5 commitments to defend NATO territory.
He described NATO as “the greatest military alliance in the history of the world.”
The president said he would send more troops to Europe and deploy them to NATO’s eastern countries such as Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Romania but repeated that he did not want American troops going to war in Russia with Ukraine.
“Our forces are not and will not be engaged in a conflict with Russia in Ukraine,” Biden said.
The president said he was already taking steps to ready additional forces to Europe if necessary.
When asked if he believed Putin was prepared to use nuclear weapons, Biden replied, “I have no idea what he’s threatening.”

Russia Issues Ukraine Terms of Surrender: Give Up Your Weapons
A top Kremlin spokesman told reporters on Thursday that Russia would consider ending its unprovoked military assault on Ukraine if the Ukrainian government accepted terms of surrender, which included the removal of all “weapons” from the country.
Russian strongman Vladimir Putin announced a full assault on Ukraine in the early morning hours of Thursday, claiming the government in Kyiv is illegitimate and that a military invasion was necessary to protect ethnic Russians in the Donbas region of Ukraine. Putin had recognized Russian proxy paramilitaries in the Donbas areas of Donetsk and Luhansk as sovereign “countries” on Monday, during a speech in which he insisted Ukraine “was completely created by Russia” and had no “tradition” of being a country.
As of Thursday afternoon Eastern time, the Russian invasion had resulted in Russian soldiers occupying Ukraine’s Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and attacking the cities of Kyiv, Mariupol, Kharkiv, and Dnipro, in addition to extensive fighting in the Donbas war zone. Russian proxies have been engaging in war with Ukraine in Donbas since 2014.
Speaking to reporters Thursday, Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the regime that he served was willing to end its violence against Ukraine if the government of President Volodymyr Zelensky accepted Russia’s “terms of surrender,” according to Russian government propaganda outlet RT.
“According to Peskov, Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his preparedness to engage in discussions with his Ukrainian counterpart, with a focus on obtaining a guarantee of neutral status and the promise of no weapons on its territory,” RT reported. “These are terms that, according to Peskov, would enable the achievement of the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, and eliminate what Russia currently views as a threat to the security of its state and people.”
Putin has branded the invasion of Ukraine a “denazification,” claiming the current government in Kyiv is a Nazi imposter regime imposed after popular protests resulted in the resignation of Putin ally former President Viktor Yanukovych in 2014. Zelensky defeated Yanukovych’s successor, Petro Poroshenko, in a free and fair election in 2019 unrelated to the 2014 protests. Zelensky is Jewish and the grandson of World War II veterans who fought against Nazi Germany – a fact he emphasized in a speech to the Russian people on Wednesday.
“According to Peskov, Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his preparedness to engage in discussions with his Ukrainian counterpart, with a focus on obtaining a guarantee of neutral status and the promise of no weapons on its territory,” RT’s report continued.
