Early life

Penn was born in Santa Monica, California,[4] to actor and director Leo Penn and actress Eileen Ryan (née Annucci).[4][5] His older brother is musician Michael Penn. His younger brother, actor Chris Penn, died in 2006.His father was Jewish, the son of emigrants from the Russian Empire,[6][7][8][9][10] while his mother is a Catholic of Irish and Italian descent.[10][11] Penn was raised in a secular home[8] in Malibu, California, and attended Malibu Park Junior High School[12] and Santa Monica High School, as Malibu had no high school at that time.[13] He began making short films with some of his childhood friends including actors Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen, who lived near his home.[14]

The earliest mention of Jews in Merkinė is dated 1539, when a dispute was adjudicated (July 8) between a Jew named Konyuk and a Christian in regard to a debt of the former. In 1551 the Jews of Merkinė were named among those of fourteen other towns to be exempted from the special tax levied upon all inhabitants, with the exception of villagers and Jews, at the Lithuanian diet (Seimas) held in that year on November 27 at Vilnius.

In 1897 Jews made up 73% of the population of the town, and the community numbered 1,900.[4] From the 19th century through the period of Lithuanian independence, the Jewish community was very established and had numerous community organizations and institutions.[4] Following World War I, there was a very active Zionist movement and multiple Zionist organizations had offices in the town.[4]

Merkinė produced in the 19th century some noted Hebrew scholars, as Mordecai Melzer, Isaac Magolis (d. New York 1887), and his son Max Margolis, of the University of California.[5]

On September 10, 1941, 854 Jews from Merkinė, as well as from Liepalingis, Liškiava, and Seirijai were shot in a grove near the Jewish cemetery[6] by German Nazis and their Lithuanian collaborators. A mass grave of Jews killed during the Nazi occupation is in the forest behind the town.

Leonard Francis Penn (August 27, 1921 – September 5, 1998) was an American actor and director and the father of musician Michael Penn and actors Sean Penn and Chris Penn.

Early life

Penn was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants Elizabeth (née Melincoff) and Maurice Daniel Penn (Lithuanian-Jewish family).[1][2][3]

Penn served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II as a B-24 Liberator bombardier with the 755th Bomb Squadron, 458th Bomb Group, stationed in England as part of the Eighth Air Force.[4]

Politics

Penn supported the Hollywood trade unions[6] and refused to accuse others to the House Un-American Activities Committee in their investigation of suspected Communist infiltration of the film industry.Penn was subsequently blacklisted, and Paramount refused to renew his contract. As a result, Penn was not able to work as a movie actor.[7] He found acting work in television, but CBS ousted him after receiving an anonymous accusation thathe had addressed a Communist political meeting.[8] Barred from acting in film or TV, he became a director.[9]

The Oscar-winning actor and political activist Sean Penn also writes for the magazine about his father, Leo, who was blacklisted for several years for expressing sympathy with trade unions. He remembers seeing the elder Penn deliberately blank the director of On the Waterfront and A Streetcar Named Desire, Elia Kazan, when father and son accidentally stumbled on to the set of the film-maker's 1976 movie The Last Tycoon during a beachside walk. Kazan had named colleagues and industry friends as communists before the committee to save himself from prosecution. Penn also calls for the body that organises the Oscars to apologise for its role in the blacklist.

In its latest issue, the magazine features a column by Willie Wilkerson, son of founder Billy Wilkerson, admitting his father was motivated by spite to publish lists of left-leaning film industry workers that influenced US politicians during the postwar McCarthy era. The elder Wilkerson was annoyed at having been shut out by an exclusive "club" of Hollywood bosses when he tried to open his own studio in the 20s, his son revealed. By way of revenge, the magazine's proprietor decided to destroy his enemies' most valuable commodities by labelling them communists.

"No one has ever apologised to the victims of this holocaust," writes the younger Wilkerson, whose father published the Hollywood Reporter between 1930 and 1962. "So on the eve of this dark 65th anniversary, I feel an apology is necessary. On behalf of my family, and particularly my late father, I wish to convey my sincerest apologies and deepest regrets to those who were victimised by this unfortunate incident."
