Russia Summons Israeli Envoy Over Statements Supporting Ukraine

This comes after Bennett offered humanitarian aid to Ukraine and Lapid condemned the Russian attack on the country

Israeli Ambassador to Russia Alexander Ben Zvi was summoned Friday for clarifications by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov following Israel's expression of support for Ukraine after Russia invaded the country.

Earlier on Friday, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett offered humanitarian aid to Ukraine in a phone call with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The two leaders discussed the situation in Ukraine, and particularly the fighting around the capital Kyiv. According to the Israeli statement, Bennett "reiterated his hope for a swift end to the fighting" and said that he "stands by the Ukrainian people in these difficult times."

On Thursday, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid condemned the Russian attack on Ukraine, calling it a blatant violation of the international order, and said Israel is ready to provide humanitarian assistance to the citizens of Ukraine.

On Friday, Lapid tweeted that he spoke with his German counterpart, Annalena Baerbock about Israel's aid offer of humanitarian assistance to the Ukrainian people.

Israel's Diaspora Affairs Minister Nachman Shai announced also on Friday a 10-million-shekel ($3.1 million) aid package to Ukraine’s Jewish community.

Following Israel's official statement of support, and just before launching its full-scale attack on Ukraine, Russia condemned the Israeli occupation of the Golan Heights and said it does not recognize Israel's sovereignty in the region.
