Canada sanctions Putin, reveals stance on SWIFT

Ottawa has accused Moscow of waging a “war on freedom” with its military operation in Ukraine

Canada has imposed sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has revealed. The move followed similar announcements from the UK, the EU, and the US. The Canadian PM has blamed the Russian leadership for the “barbaric war” against freedom and democracy as he announced the sanctions.

The measure is part of “severe, coordinated sanctions” that Canada and its allies are imposing on people who “bear the greatest responsibility for the death and destruction occurring in Ukraine,” Trudeau said in a press conference in Ottawa on Friday.

Calling the Russian military operation in Ukraine an “unjustified and unprovoked invasion,” the PM also said Canada would sanction 57 additional people in Belarus for their alleged role in it.

Trudeau echoed British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s call to remove Russia from the SWIFT international banking system. Several EU countries have objected to such a measure, warning that it would cut them off from vital resources they are continuing to buy from Russia, such as oil and gas.

The Canadian PM accused Russia of waging “war on freedom, on democracy, and on the rights of Ukrainians and all people to determine their own future,” while praising Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as “the embodiment of the courage of Ukrainian people.”

“I am inspired by his resolve and his devotion to his country,” Trudeau said.

On Thursday, Moscow announced its troops would enter Ukraine to “demilitarize and denazify” the country and “defend” the population of the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Lugansk from “genocide.” Zelensky has accused Russia of unprovoked aggression and said Ukraine had no plans for a full-blown attack on the Donbass republics.

'Loner military drop-out' wanted for shooting ex-Kentucky lawmaker's daughter, 32, dead as she slept during 4am home invasion could use his Marine Corps training to escape police, former mentor says

Shannon Vince Gilday, 23, of Taylor Mill, is wanted for the murder of Jordan Morgan, 31, who was killed during a home invasion early Tuesday

A former Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) mentor described the murder suspect as an outlier who had trouble making friends

'Like all freshmen, they're weird at first,' the mentor said. 'He’s funny and willing to learn, he was always a loner that is why I took him under my wings'

Police announced on Thursday they believe Gilday forced his way into former state Rep. Wesley Morgan's mansion armed with a rifle

The victim's mom is said to be taking the news extraordinarily hard, and posted on Facebook that she too wanted to die

The man suspected of shooting dead the sleeping daughter of an ex-Kentucky lawmaker is a 'loner' and military dropout whose Marine Corps training could help him evade police, a former mentor tells DailyMail.com.

Shannon Vince Gilday, 23, is suspected of killing former state representative C. Wesley Morgan's daughter, 32-year-old Jordan Morgan, in an early morning home invasion Tuesday at the family's $6.5 million Richmond home.

Her shocking murder hit her loved ones hard, with her mother Lisa Foster saying Wednesday that she, too, wished her own life would end.

'I’m asking my Christian friends to please pray that God takes me home today,' Foster wrote on Facebook. 'I want to die.'

A statewide mandate is underway to find the alleged killer, who police say is considered armed and dangerous.

Jayo Alforque, who mentored Gilday after he joined the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) in 2017 at the University of Hawaii, described the murder suspect as an outlier who had trouble making friends.

'Like all freshmen, they're weird at first,' Alforque told DailyMail.com on Friday, adding: 'He’s funny and willing to learn, he was always a loner that is why I took him under my wings and showed him how to be social.'

Twitter announces new policy on Russia, Ukraine

The social network has vowed to crack down on disinformation and paused ads in both countries to prioritize critical info

Twitter has temporarily suspended the display of advertisements on its platform in Ukraine and Russia in a declared effort to make people’s safety a priority amid the military conflict between the two countries. Twitter noted that ads could distract users from the critical information.

“We’re temporarily pausing advertisements in Ukraine and Russia to ensure critical public safety information is elevated and ads don’t detract from it,” the company declared in a statement on Friday, revealing that it had also “paused some Tweet recommendations from people you don’t follow on Home Timeline to reduce the spread of abusive content.”

The social network also announced it was “proactively reviewing Tweets to detect platform manipulation (or other inauthentic behavior)” and was cracking down on “synthetic and manipulated media” that provide “false or misleading depiction” of the conflict in Ukraine.

Twitter – which revealed it would match employee donations to Ukrainian refugees – also announced that it was “actively monitoring vulnerable high-profile accounts, including journalists, activists, and government officials and agencies to mitigate any attempts at a targeted takeover or manipulation.”

The statement was posted in three languages: English, Russian and Ukrainian. The change in Twitter’s policy comes as the Russian military operation in Ukraine goes into its third day. Launched on Thursday by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the request of newly-recognized Donbass republics, the offensive has a stated goal of “demilitarizing” and “denazifying” Ukraine. Putin has insisted that the military action was necessary to protect people of the two breakaway republics from further Ukrainian “aggression” pointing to the 8 years of infighting between the separatists and Kiev forces after Donbass split from Kiev following the US-backed coup in 2014. The Kremlin argued that Kiev was unwilling to settle the conflict with Donetsk and Lugansk republics via the mechanisms provided under the 2014 and 2015 Minsk agreements, of which Russia was a party, and instead was eyeing a full-scale recapture of the areas by force. Kiev denied these plans.
