Those are just old school unit identifiers, at the brigade level I think. They are called chevrons. Used for long range identification by friendly forces.

The brass was always weird about them and we always made sure it never was covered with mud or duct. Especially during Desert Storm. Didn't want any friendly fire incidents.

I would have been one of 24 guys to pull the lanyard on the short range nukes we had in West Germany during the last phase of the end of the Soviet union.

I was in Doucheland for reunification.
