"Several of the Supreme Court's key conservative justices signaled Monday they may be willing to restrict the Environmental Protection Agency's ability to limit greenhouse gases, which could have far-reaching consequences on efforts to combat climate change and restrict the federal government’s power. The court heard oral arguments Monday in West Virginia v. EPA and other consolidated cases, in which GOP-led states and coal companies asked the Supreme Court to limit how much the EPA can regulate emissions from the power sector, the second-biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions. The Biden administration hasn’t actually come up with a rule yet to regulate power plant emissions, and argued Friday the court shouldn’t rule against the EPA now given that the issue is still “abstract”, but the challengers want to preemptively limit how far the rule the EPA eventually imposes can go. 2035. That’s the year President Joe Biden has set as a target for the energy sector to run entirely on clean energy, a goal that likely won’t be reached if the EPA can’t fully regulate the sector’s emissions."
