I don’t think Putin actually wants to take Kyiv. I think he just wants all the land east of the river and is just using his assault on Kyiv as leverage for a peace deal to keep the eastern half of the country.
So what Putin is doing in Kyiv is probably a diversion while he secures the eastern half of Ukraine.
