Russia expresses nuclear fears

Moscow hopes that atomic Armageddon is not on the cards

A nuclear war would be catastrophic for humanity and Moscow prays that the tense situation in Ukraine will not spiral into this, one of Russia’s top diplomats has claimed after President Vladimir Putin placed the country’s arsenal on high combat alert.

Speaking at a press conference at the UN on Monday, Russia’s permanent representative Vasily Nebenzya responded to journalists’ questions as to whether an atomic strike is looming.

“As for the use of nuclear weapons, I hope God will not allow this,” he said.

Speaking via video-link at the Geneva disarmament conference on Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov argued that there will be no winner if a nuclear war were to erupt.

Moscow’s top diplomat also expressed hope that such a conflict would never take place and called on the US to remove its warheads from Europe. He also accused Kiev of threatening to violate its non-nuclear status.

“It is unacceptable to us that, contrary to the fundamental provisions of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, US atomic armaments are still located on the territory of some European countries,” the official remarked.

He added that “the dangers posed by [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky's regime to neighboring countries and international security have increased significantly after Kiev’s authorities played dangerous games related to plans to acquire their own nuclear weapons.”

On Sunday, Putin ordered placing the country’s ground units, equipped with intercontinental ballistic missiles, as well as vessels from the Northern and Pacific Fleets, on high combat alert. He explained the decision comes in the wake of “illegitimate sanctions” against Moscow and “aggressive statements” coming from US and EU officials.

Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine last Thursday following the president’s address to the nation. The goal of the offensive, according to the Kremlin, is “to protect the people [of Donbass] who have been tortured for eight years by the Ukrainian regime.” After several days of fighting, Moscow and Kiev held the first round of negotiations in Belarus on Monday. Further rounds of discussions are expected to resume in the near future.

looky, looky:

Ukraine Asks Creditors to Write Off Its $57 Billion Debt

Starting off in 1992 with a foreign debt of $0 thanks to Russia’s commitment to take on the Soviet Union’s $100 billion in liabilities, successive Ukrainian governments have piled up tens of billions-worth of dollars in obligations to foreign creditors, including the International Monetary Fund, the United States and the European Union.

International creditors should write off Ukraine’s foreign debt in light of the Russian military operation in the country, Accounts Chamber of Ukraine chief Valeriy Patskan has suggested.

“The scale of the destruction in Ukraine caused by Russian aggression is colossal! In view of this, our external creditors must be required to write off Ukraine’s debts. To date, the external debt is 1.6 trillion hryvnia, or more than $57 billion,” Patskan wrote in a post on his Facebook page on Tuesday.

“International financial organizations should revise the debt policy and zero out the debts of Ukraine!” he urged.

Ukraine’s debts to foreign creditors have grown steadily under each of its successive governments, with former president Leonid Kuchma the only one of the country’s six post-independence presidents to take measures to try to reduce the debt burden between the early and mid-2000s.

Ukraine became a member of the International Monetary Fund in 1992, with the creditor providing the country with tens of billions in conditional loans which required the country to make economic reforms aimed at opening the country to foreign, predominantly Western, markets. These reforms, combined large-scale corruption and a variety of social ills, turned the country from one of the most advanced industrial economies in the world into one of the poorest countries in Europe in the space of 30 years.

Kiev currently owes the IMF over $5 billion, with another $2.3 billion owed to the International Bank of Reconstruction of Development, and billions more to the United States, the European Union, Canada, Germany and Japan. About three quarters of the country’s debts are denominated in US dollars, with the dollar-hryvnia exchange rate hitting a historic all-time low in recent trading owing to the ongoing conflict.

Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine on Thursday aimed at demilitarizing the country after a request for assistance from its Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republic allies after weeks of shelling, sniper and sabotage attacks by Kiev forces in the Donbass, and months of escalating tensions between Moscow and Kiev’s Western sponsors. The conflict is the culmination of a crisis which began in February 2014, when Ukraine’s neutrality-seeking government was overthrown in an unconstitutional coup d’etat and replaced by political forces seeking to pull Ukraine into the European Union and NATO.

An Asteroid Heading For Earth Has Changed Its Trajectory In A Strange Way As If Someone Intervened

Asteroid 2022 AE1 was discovered on January 6, and a day later, the automated system for determining the orbit of asteroids (AstOD) recognized it as potentially dangerous.

This system automatically calculates orbits from asteroid observation data provided by telescopes and observatories around the world.

The asteroid was moving so fast that it didn’t have enough time to try to swerve, and the European Space Agency (ESA) said that unfortunately the chance of a collision is increasing.

For several busy January days this year, astronomers tracked a near-Earth object heading towards Earth. Its trajectory indicated that it would hit the planet in 2023, but it strangely changed course.

The asteroid was on its way to Earth, and astronomers had already predicted enormous damage from its collision on July 4, 2023.

According to the European Space Agency (ESA), the asteroid was moving so fast that it physically did not have time to deviate.

After seven days of observations, the probability of a collision with the Earth increased. The first observations were followed by a dramatic week when the Moon covered a dangerous object, and no one knows what happened to it.

When the Moon opened the view, the telescope showed that the probability of impact had dropped sharply. It has since been confirmed that 2022 AE1 will not impact Earth and has been removed from ESA’s list of hazardous objects.

Astronomers predict that asteroid 2022 AE1 will pass from Earth at a distance of about ten million kilometers, which is almost 20 times the distance to the Moon.

However, the very fact of such a sharp change in the asteroid’s flight trajectory remains strange. What or who influenced him remains a mystery.
