China reacts to idea of Japan hosting US nukes

Beijing urges Tokyo to ‘deeply reflect on its history’ after former PM suggests hosting US nuclear arms

Chinese officials have rebuked Japan over former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s call to ease the country’s non-nuclear principles and consider hosting strategic US weapons to boost security amid rising geopolitical tensions.

“Japanese politicians have frequently spread fallacies related to Taiwan and even blatantly made false remarks that violate the nation’s three non-nuclear principles,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told reporters on Tuesday.

Those principles include bans on possessing, producing or permitting the introduction of nuclear arms. Japan, the only country ever to be attacked with nuclear weapons, adopted a pacifist constitution after its crushing defeat in World War II.

However, Abe said in a television interview on Sunday that Japan should no longer consider it “taboo” to consider having nuclear weapons on its soil. He noted that multiple NATO members host US strategic weapons under nuclear-sharing agreements with Washington, adding, “We need to understand how security is maintained around the world.”

Abe also has called for the US to commit to intervening militarily if Taiwan is attacked by China, ending its strategy of “ambiguity” on the issue. A military conflict between China and Taiwan would constitute a security emergency for Japan.

Wang said Japan’s leaders must be “cautious in words and deeds on the Taiwan issue to stop provoking trouble.” He added, “We strongly ask Japan to deeply reflect on its history.”

Summers: Biden Needs To Pivot From COVID, Prepare America For 'Struggle Ahead'

"We are looking at an event of potentially vast significance and concern," Summers said in a follow-up interview Monday - referring to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and Moscow's increasing alignment with Beijing.

"Our ability to meet these challenges depends on recognizing them for what they are."

According to Summers, Biden will need to rally Americans to support the principles of democracy against authoritarianism.

"The United States faces far graver challenges to its security than anyone would have thought likely even several years ago," said Summers, who served as head of the National Economic Council during the Obama administration."That needs to have ramifications for almost every aspect of our national life."

Summers, also a former director of the White House National Economic Council, likened the importance of the tightening bonds between Moscow and Beijing today to the realignment of China toward the U.S. that President Richard Nixon achieved in 1972.

American corporate leaders are among those that may need to rethink their approaches in the new environment, he said. “Anyone who thinks that is not a challenge to their ability to flourish and profit as a business is making an enormous mistake.” -Bloomberg

"There was a tendency for some CEOs to treat the United States as a kind of primitive loyalty, but to emphasize that they had to do what was best for their company – which could mean going anywhere and doing anything," he said yesterday.

When it comes to China, Summers says that too much effort has been spent by US policymakers on corporate interests in that country - while Washington remains "underinvested" in US technological competitiveness.

"When we see the dominant emphasis in the economic policies of many countries shift from international integration to self-reliance as a dominant economic value, we know we are headed into a much more dangerous world," Summers added - while urging Biden to put "more emphasis on our stake in what’s happening globally" - particularly when it comes to challenges such as safeguarding the US Dollar as the global reserve by moving to contain inflation, resisting global aggression, and addressing semiconductor shortages.

Of note, in November Summers was critical of the Biden administration for being "behind the curve" on inflation ravaging the economy.

"We are going to need to spend more on national defense and more on global security – in terms of not just military threats, but threats from climate change and threats from pandemics."

Trump slams 'RINOs, Warmongers, and Fake News' over Putin

The former president's criticism comes hours before President Joe Biden is set to speak at his first State of the Union address.

Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday slammed "RINOs, Warmongers, and Fake News" for misrepresenting his remarks about Russian President Vladimir Putin, who ordered the invasion of Ukraine last week.

After Putin's incursion, Trump criticized the Biden administration's response, and some critics latched onto his use of the word "smart."

Putin is "taking over a country for $2 worth of sanctions. I’d say that’s pretty smart," Trump reportedly said last week.

"The RINOs, Warmongers, and Fake News continue to blatantly lie and misrepresent my remarks on Putin because they know this terrible war being waged against Ukraine would have never happened under my watch," Trump wrote in a statement Tuesday.

"They did absolutely nothing as Putin declared much of Ukraine an 'independent territory,'" he said.

Putin last week recognized the independence of Donetsk and Luhansk in the Dunbass region of eastern Ukraine. Countries did not move to sanction him until after he launched his invasion of Ukraine.

"There should be no war waging now in Ukraine, and it is terrible for humanity that Biden, NATO, and the West have failed so terribly in allowing it to start," Trump asserted. "Instead of showing strength and toughness, they declared the Global Warming Hoax as the #1 threat to global security, killed American Energy Independence, and then made Europe, the U.S., and the rest of the World dependent on Russian oil."

Critics have claimed that the Biden adminsitration's energy policy has emboldened Putin and facilitated the invasion of Ukraine, Just the News reported.

"They laid down the welcome mat and gave Russia the opening, now Putin may be getting everything he wanted, with Ukraine and the rest of the World suffering the consequences. It’s terrible, but this is what you get with Biden, the Democrats, and RINO warmongers!" Trump concluded.

The former president's criticism comes as President Joe Biden is set to speak at the State of the Union address Tuesday evening.
