Ukraine Asks Xbox, PlayStation to Suspend Russian and Belarussian Accounts

The government of Ukraine is calling upon Xbox and PlayStation to suspend their customers in Russia and Belarus. Russian exports, such as Vodka, have been barred across the western world while aircraft from the country have been forbidden from flying to and from both the U.S. and EU.

Earlier today, the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine, Mykhailo Fedorov, called on Xbox and PlayStation — which are owned by Microsoft and Sony respectively — to take action against customers in Russia and Belarus. Fedorov called on the video game giants to “temporarily block all Russian and Belarusian accounts”, adding to mounting cultural pressure on the two nations. He also called for all Russian and Belarusian esports teams to be temporarily barred from competition going forward.

Lastly, Fedorov called for all upcoming international esports tournaments set to take place in Russia and Belarus to be cancelled. “We are sure that such actions will motivate the citizens of Russia to proactively stop the disgraceful military aggression,” Fedorov wrote in a letter.

In addition to the banning of Russian exports, and calls from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to take action against Russian oil imports, the Kremlin has also faced backlash on the cultural front. On Monday, two Russian titles were removed from consideration by the Glasgow Film Festival. “We just believe that it would be inappropriate to proceed as normal with these screenings in the current circumstances,” the film festival said in a statement. Additionally, Russian and Belarusian athletes have been sanctioned or banned outright from several competitions and organizations, including the International Ice Hockey Federation.

On the gaming front, EA Sports opted to remove the Russian national team from FIFA 22. Sony and Xbox have yet to respond to the requests from Ukraine.

Now that is some spin

Huge explosion 'like a small nuke' hits Kyiv as series of blasts rock Ukrainian capital – with train station rocked where desperate locals are fleeing from Putin's bombs in latest night-time attacks

At least four explosions were reported in quick succession in Kiev at around 2am local time

Earlier, Russian air strike hit near Kyiv's southern main railways station at around 7pm local time, reports said

It comes as thousands continue to flee Ukraine's capital, a week since Putin launched his deadly invasion

Ukraine's interior ministry adviser Anton Herashchenko said the strike - near Ukraine's Ministry of Defence - may have e cut off central heating supply to parts of the Ukrainian capital amid freezing winter temperatures

Earlier, bodies of five people killed in a strike on Kyiv's television tower were today piled into a van by police

Mayor Vitali Klitschko said defences are being built and that 'we will fight' to stop the city being captured

Came after Russia bombarded a TV tower overnight, killing five people and damaging a Holocaust memorial

Vladimir Putin's forces have today renewed attacks on other cities including Kherson, Kharkiv and Mariupol

A huge explosion that looked like a small nuke hit Kyiv in the early hours of the morning as a series of blasts rocked the Ukrainian capital, while terrified residents were urged to go to their nearest shelters.

The quiet was broken first by the blaring of air raid sirens at around 2am local time in multiple districts across the city, before its buildings were lit up by a huge blast from a bomb fired by Vladimir Putin's invading forces.

According to local media, Kyiv was not the only city to come under fire. The Kyiv Independent reported that air raid alerts were issued in multiple regions included Kyiv Oblast, Lviv, Zhytomyr, Frankivsk, Chernihiv and Odesa.

Footage from the capital, filmed from windows overlooking the city, showed at least one massive explosion that lit up the night sky, and appeared to cause a shock-wave.

In another video, captured by CBS News reporters moments after signing off a report, two bursts of light could be seen over Kyiv. While the explosions were not filmed directly, the intensity of them was enough to shock the reporter and his film crew, who were some distance away from the blasts.

Earlier in the night, a Russian missile struck near Kyiv's southern main rail station on Wednesday night where thousands of women and children are being evacuated, Ukraine's state-run railway company Ukrzaliznytsya said in a statement.

The station building suffered minor damage and the number of any casualties was not yet known, it said, adding trains were still operating despite the blast and fears of another night of brutal attacks by Vladimir Putin's forces.

Ukraine's interior ministry adviser Anton Herashchenko said the blast was caused by wreckage from a downed Russian cruise missile, not a direct rocket strike. Trains continued to run. Herashchenko added the strike may have cut off central heating supply to parts of the Ukrainian capital amid freezing winter temperatures.

A Reuters witness said the explosion made the earth shake.

Russian diplomats evacuate Canberra embassy after suspicious package sent

Russian diplomats have been evacuated from the embassy in Canberra with police and investigators in HAZMAT suits in attendance.

Russian diplomats have been evacuated from the embassy in Canberra with police and investigators in HAZMAT suits in attendance after a suspicious package was detected.

The package, believed to be white powder, prompted the evacuation this morning with multiple emergency service vehicles in attendance.

It follows the arrival of a suspicious package at the Russian Embassy in Wellington, New Zealand, on Monday.

An envelope containing white powder was received, along with a threatening note.

The Russian embassy in Canberra is located at Canberra avenue in Griffith and is a busy road leading to the Manuka district close to Parliament House.

The road was blocked this morning as police conducted their investigations.

The Russian embassy stands opposite to the Kingston Hotel, known as The Kingo, which was the site of many meetings between Vladimir Petrov and ASIO agents in the 1950s.

In April 1954 Vladimir and Evdokia Petrov, two Soviet spies who travelled to Australia as diplomats defected in a move that made international news.

After Mr Petrov defected without telling his wife, the Soviet Embassy accused the Australian Government of kidnapping Vladimir and placed Evdokia under house arrest in the Soviet Embassy in Canberra.

In 1971, the Soviet Embassy in Canberra was bombed.

The police said that two men in a car nearby were arrested after the explosion, which shattered all the embassy‘s front glass windows and heavily damaged the door. No one was injured.

NRA Scores Court Victory Against AG Letitia James In New York

The NRA won a legal victory when a New York Supreme Court judge ruled that Attorney General Letitia James could not pursue dissolving the gun-rights group.

“In short, the Complaint does not allege the type of public harm that is the legal linchpin for imposing the ‘corporate death penalty,'” New York Supreme Judge Joel Cohen ruled.

During her 2018 campaign to be New York’s attorney general, James labeled the gun-rights group a “terrorist organization” and vowed to “target the NRA.”

A court in New York handed a prominent Second Amendment advocacy organization a victory Wednesday in an ongoing legal battle over its existence, among other allegations.

New York Supreme Court Judge Joel Cohen ruled that Attorney General Letitia James could not seek to dissolve the National Rifle Association in a ruling issued Wednesday.

“The NRA is a prominent advocacy organization that represents the interests of millions of members who have stuck with it despite the well-publicized allegations in this and other cases,” Cohen wrote in his ruling. “The State-sponsored dissolution of such an entity is not something to be taken lightly or without a compelling need.”

“In short, the Complaint does not allege the type of public harm that is the legal linchpin for imposing the ‘corporate death penalty,'” Cohen added.

James sued to dissolve the NRA in August 2020, claiming financial misconduct on the part of top officers of the gun-rights organization, including Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre. The NRA counter-sued, claiming James was retaliating against the group for its advocacy against gun control.

George Shultz, former President of Bechtel, passes at 100

When Shultz first joined Bechtel in 1974 as executive vice president, he already had more experience and accomplishments at age 53 than most people achieve in a lifetime. In addition to teaching economics and business at MIT and the University of Chicago, he served as senior economist to President Eisenhower and as Secretary of Labor and Secretary of the Treasury under President Nixon…Shultz passed away at his home near Stanford University, where he was a long-time Fellow at the Hoover Institution on campus. His Bechtel family extends sympathy to his wife, Charlotte Mailliard Shultz, and his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
