I think it's just Putin realizing he's getting too old to fuck around anymore.
Ukraine was taken over by a bunch of gangster thugs in a Revolution/Coup style violent chain of events.
Many Russians were killed savagely.
Putin is now taking it back.
Because obviously he is a bigger and stronger thug gangster that is done dealing with weaklings.
