NATO does not question Russia’s status as world power, British PM says

"This is not a NATO conflict, and it will not become one. No ally has sent combat troops to Ukraine," Boris Johnson stressed

NEW YORK, March 6. /TASS/. NATO does not harbor animosity towards Russian people, nor does it question Russia’s status as a world power, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in an op-ed published by The New York Times on Sunday.

"We have no hostility toward the Russian people, and we have no desire to impugn a great nation and a world power," he said, pointing out that "Ukraine had no serious prospect of NATO membership in the near future."

"This is not a NATO conflict, and it will not become one. No ally has sent combat troops to Ukraine," the UK prime minister noted.

Earlier, he proposed to NATO allies to support the international plan of action on Ukraine. It includes mobilizing an international humanitarian coalition, providing defensive equipment to Kiev, maximizing the economic pressure on Russia, preventing "any creeping normalization" of Russia’s actions in Ukraine, seeking diplomatic paths towards de-escalation yet only if "the government of Ukraine has full agency in any potential settlement," as well as bolstering Euro-Atlantic security.

According to Johnson, the West and the entire international community should support these initiatives. Next week, he intends to discuss them with his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau and his Dutch colleague Mark Rutte who will visit London on Monday, March 7. On Tuesday, March 8, the British capital will host the leaders of the Visegrad Group (Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary) who together with the British prime minister will participate in a special meeting dedicated to Ukraine.

U.S. in talks with Poland on deal to send fighter jets to Ukraine

After speaking via Zoom to Ukraine’s president, U.S. lawmakers from both parties urged the White House to help Kyiv obtain fighter jets from its Eastern European neighbors.

The Biden administration is holding talks with Poland about a possible deal to help provide Soviet-era fighter jets to Ukraine, a White House spokesperson said.

The deal would involve Poland donating its old Russian-made MiG fighters to Ukraine, and then replacing them with the purchase of U.S.-made F-16 jets.

“We are working with the Poles on this issue and consulting with the rest of our NATO allies,” a White House spokesperson said.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Sunday confirmed that the discussions are underway but said the timing is still unclear.

“We’re looking actively now at the question of airplanes that Poland may provide to Ukraine and looking at how we might be able to backfill should Poland decide to . . . supply those planes,” Blinken said at a news conference during a visit to Moldova.

“How quickly might that happen? I can’t speak to a timeline.”

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made an urgent appeal in a phone call with more than 300 members of Congress on Saturday for fighter jets and other military aid to fend off invading Russian troops.

“His main ask was for the U.S. to allow Poland and Romania to transfer Soviet era jets to #Ukraine, and for the U.S. to compensate by giving more advanced planes to those two NATO allies,” Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif., said in a tweet.

Ukraine’s government is interested in the old Soviet-era planes because the country’s military pilots are trained to fly those aircraft and are familiar with the planes.

Ukraine’s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, on Saturday also called on Western countries to provide Kyiv with warplanes to defend the country after holding talks with Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the Poland-Ukraine border.

“It’s no secret that the highest demand that we have is in fighter jets, attack aircraft, and air-defense systems,” Kuleba told reporters after meeting Blinken.

“If we lose the skies, there will be much more blood on the ground,” Kuleba added.

US drafts plan for government-in-exile, guerrilla war in Ukraine

Officials in Washington expect Russia to face a fierce and bloody ‘insurgency’

US drafts plan for government-in-exile, guerrilla war in Ukraine.

The flags of Ukraine, the United States, and the District of Columbia fly together on Pennsylvania Avenue near the Capito.

The US and its allies are quietly working on “contingency plans” in case Russian forces succeed in their operation in Ukraine and force the current government into exile, the Washington Post reported on Saturday.

The prospects of Russian troops seizing the Ukrainian capital, Kiev have sparked “a flurry of planning” at the US State Department, the media outlet reported. Washington allegedly expects the weapons America and its allies are currently pumping into Ukraine to be used during the protracted insurgency they expect to follow. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will take the role of “the pivotal force” rallying Ukrainians to continue fighting Russia, according to reports.

“We’re doing contingency planning now for every possibility,” a US administration official told the Washington Post, adding that one such possibility involves Zelensky establishing a government-in-exile in Poland.

On Friday, NBC News reported that a group of House conservatives met with Robert O’Brien, former US President Donald Trump’s national security adviser, who urged them to support Zelensky’s government regardless of where it relocates.

“We should recognize them as a government in exile, in Warsaw or in London, and we ought to refer to Ukraine as occupied Ukraine,” O’Brien told NBC after the meeting. Lawmakers in Washington believe there is “substantial value” in Zelensky remaining in Ukraine, including a “political advantage,” an “optics advantage,” and a “morale advantage,” but not if his life is in jeopardy, NBC reported.

Another part of the plan is to support what the US calls a future “pro-independence” insurgency, including through supplying it with arms. Two members of the House Intelligence Committee – Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Illinois) and Mike Turner (R-Ohio) – are currently pushing for bipartisan legislation requiring the Biden administration to develop an insurgency support strategy, according to NBC.

“We have to make sure that they are equipped with lethal and non-lethal assistance, as well as intelligence, to fight off the Russians,” Krishnamoorthi told NBC News on Friday.

Representative Seth Moulton (D-Massachusetts), a former Marine Corps infantry officer who served in Iraq and visited Ukraine last December, advocates supplying Ukrainians with small arms, ammunition, and explosives to equip them for guerrilla fights. “Think about the kinds of things that would be used by saboteurs as opposed to an army repelling a frontal invasion,” he told Washington Post.

The Biden administration has not made any official comments on the alleged plans to support a potential insurgency in Ukraine. According to the Washington Post, US and NATO officials are wary of openly supporting such ideas out of fear of being drawn into direct confrontation with Moscow.

Putin defends rationale for Ukraine offensive.

On Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin compared the massive sanctions imposed by Western nations on Russia over its attack on Ukraine to a “declaration of war.” So far, the Russian military action launched on February 24 has sparked fierce condemnation in the West and resulted in the US and allies slapping Moscow with unprecedented sanctions targeting Russia’s finances, banking sector, aviation, and space industry.

Moscow maintains its invasion of Ukraine is aimed at protecting the people of the Donbass republics, which it recently recognized, as well as at “demilitarizing” and “denazifying” Ukraine. Kiev insists the attack was unprovoked, maintaining it had no plans to retake the breakaway Donetsk and Lugansk regions by force.
