Potential pandemic bird flu modified to be more dangerous in new risky NIH research

By Dilyana Gaytandzhieva -January 24, 2022

The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) has continued funding risky gain-of-function research (GoF) on potential pandemic pathogens, newly disclosed information reveals. The US government medical research agency has funded scientists to study avian influenza (bird flu) which does not transmit among humans. However, the NIH projects aim to make avian influenza viruses able to transmit among mammals and assess their pandemic potential as a possible threat to humans.

Gain-of-function (GOF) studies improve the ability of a pathogen to cause disease by increasing its virulence and transmissibility. These dangerous experiments have not been terminated even though COVID-19 has been suspected to be the result of such NIH-funded GoF research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Instead of terminating all GoF research since the pandemic started NIH and its sub agency – the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), have continued their financial support for the following GoF studies: Transmissibility of Avian Influenza Viruses in Mammals (NIAID support ended in August 2021); Centers of Excellence for Influenza Research and Surveillance (CEIRS) (NIAID support ended in March 2021). The third one: Mimicking evolution to define mechanisms of airborne transmission of H7N9 viruses, started on 2nd September 2021 and is ongoing.

ISTC Facts Sheet

What is the ISTC

The International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) was established in Moscow by international agreement in November 1992 as a nonproliferation program coordinating the efforts of numerous governments, international organizations, and private sector industries, providing former weapons scientists (FWS) from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Georgia with new opportunities for sustainable, peaceful employment. In 2015 The ISTC agreement was renewed, with an updated mission of supporting activities that address the global security threat of the proliferation of WMD-applicable chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) knowledge and materials, worldwide. ISTC activities fall in two broad categories: (research) projects, which engages experts in the development of new science and technology (S&T), and Supplemental Programs, which include workshops and other events to address non-proliferation issues and to integrate experts in the global S&T and industrial communities; training. In the 25 years ISTC has been active with over 76,000 experts in more than 800 research institutes spread across CIS and Georgia whom have been engaged in ISTC projects and activities.

ISTC's HISTORY / CHRONOLGY

Founded in 1992 by the EU, Japan, USA, and Russia.

ISTC is an intergovernmental organization with Diplomatic status whose operations began in March 1994

The ISTC was originally located in Moscow, but moved in July 2015 to Astana, Republic of Kazakhstan

ISTC has been one of the largest sponsors of R&D in the Former Soviet Union, supporting experts and scientists to redirect their R&D efforts to peaceful and market sustainable technologies.

The New ISTC Continuation Agreement was signed in December 2015 and ratified by all member countries by December 2017

ISTC is currently headquartered in Astana and has branch offices in Armenia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Members to the ISTC Agreement are Armenia, the European Union, Japan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Norway, South Korea, and Tajikistan and the United States

The Pentagon begins biological experiments with Bulgarian soldiers: documents

February 1, 2022

US military scientists from the Pentagon will conduct research related to infectious diseases on the Bulgarian military in Sofia, according to a statement in the US Federal Register of Public Procurement and Contracts . The documents were published on December 13, 2021. According to them, the US Department of Defense is looking to hire contractors, including microbiologists, to support the upcoming Pentagon military research mission in Bulgaria and Georgia from March 12 this year to March 11, 2026.

According to published documents, the program will be led by the USAMRD-G (US Army Medical Research Directorate-Georgia). USAMRD-G is a department with special status under the auspices of the Walter Reeds Research Institute (WRAIR), the largest medical research center in the United States Army. USAMRD-G military scientists have diplomatic status, although they are not diplomats and enjoy diplomatic immunity in Georgia, where they are based. This special unit operates the Pentagon's biolaboratory in Georgia - Lugar Center in Tbilisi, and conducts biological research related to viruses, insects, virus carriers, resistant bacteria and particularly dangerous pathogens, which are categorized as biological agents with the potential to be used as biological weapons.

According to the announcement, USAMRD-G will be based at the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases (NCIPD) in Sofia and will conduct research at the Military Medical Academy (MMA) and NCIPD. The document states that the program includes research on humans and animals, but does not specify what activities will be carried out or what specific viruses and bacteria will be studied.
