Ukraine calls Russia’s evacuation proposal ‘absurd’

Ukraine holding innocents hostage!

Kiev says it was “cynical” to offer refugees escape to Russia

Ukraine has rejected Russia’s proposal to evacuate civilians from major cities during its attack against the neighboring country. Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk accused Moscow of blocking evacuations in the past by “shelling [safe passage] routes.”

“Now the Russians are saying that they can open [humanitarian] corridors, but they want civilians to leave for the Russian territory, which is absurd, cynical and unacceptable,” Vereshchuk wrote on social media on Monday.

The deputy PM later told reporters that “our people will not go from Kiev to Belarus to be later airlifted to the Russian Federation.” Vereshchuk said Russia must “accept” alternative routes for refugees put forward by the Ukrainian side.

The Russian Defense Ministry urged Ukraine not to prevent civilians from leaving Kiev, Kharkov, Sumy and Mariupol on Monday for Russia via established routes. According to Moscow’s plan, people leaving Kiev were to arrive in Belarus, from where they would be flown to Russia, while some of those leaving other cities would cross into Russia directly. The defense ministry promised a temporary ceasefire starting from 10am local time on Monday.

A particularly worrying situation is in Mariupol, a city on the Azov Sea coast surrounded by the forces of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) backed by Russian troops. The DPR, which broke off from Ukraine shortly after the 2014 coup in Kiev, considers the city its territory.

Attempts to arrange a safe passage from Mariupol on Saturday and Sunday had failed, with both sides blaming each other. Ukraine accused Russia of shelling the city, while Moscow claimed that Ukrainian “nationalists” were using civilians as “a human shield,” preventing them from leaving.

Ukraine reported heavy shelling of residential areas in Kiev, Kharkov, and other places. The Russian Defense Ministry, meanwhile, insists that it only hits military sites, such as airfields, air defense units, and radar stations, and blamed numerous attacks on Ukrainian forces.

More than 1.7 million refugees have fled from Ukraine to the West after Russia attacked the country on February 24, according to the UN. An additional 96,000 people left for Russia in a week before the offensive, during the flare-up between Ukraine and the DPR, as well as the neighboring Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR), another entity that seceded from Ukraine in 2014.

Russia attacked its neighbor last month, saying that it was defending the DPR and LPR. Moscow also said it was seeking “demilitarization and denazification” of the country, insisting that Ukraine should never become a NATO member. Ukraine said the attack was completely unprovoked and denied the claim that it was planning to retake the breakaway republics by force.

Major clothing brand explains why it’s staying in Russia

Companies choosing not to leave the Russian market amid the ongoing offensive in Ukraine are facing backlash

Leading Japanese clothing brand Uniqlo will continue to operate in Russia. The owner says Russians have “the same right to live” as other people, as dozens of other international companies are rushing to leave the country in protest over its offensive on Ukraine.

“Clothing is a necessity of life. The people of Russia have the same right to live as we do,” Tadashi Yanai, the CEO of Uniqlo parent company Fast Retailing Co., said in a statement published by Nikkei newspaper.

Yanai said that while he opposes the Russian attack on Ukraine and there “should never be a war,” all Uniqlo stores will continue to work in Russia. He added that “any attempt to divide the world will, on the contrary, strengthen unity.”

Uniqlo is not the only company resisting the exodus from Russia. On March 3,Coca-Cola told TASS that “all operational, production, and logistics facilities of Coca-Cola in Russia are working.”

“We are fully responsible to our partners, society and thousands of our employees in Russia. Our absolute priority is the safety of our employees,” the company’s representative told the news agency.

Coca-Cola issued a statement on the same day saying “war is never the solution” and announcing a €1 million donation to support Red Cross operations in Ukraine, in addition to funds for Red Cross organizations in the neighboring nations of Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland.

Despite its efforts, three Ukrainian supermarket chains have removed Coca-Cola products from their shelves.

“Our supermarket chain is no longer cooperating with Coca-Cola, which continues to work in the aggressor’s territory! From now on in NOVUS stores you will not see any Coca-Cola brand product,” Novus supermarket chain announced on March 4.

Supermarket chains Fozzy Group and Varus made similar announcements.

Calls to boycott Coca-Cola have since grown on social media, with many also expressing anger at PepsiCo and McDonald’s, which have so far not responded to Russia’s offensive in Ukraine.

Russia argues that its “military operation” in Ukraine was necessary in order to “demilitarize” the country, to protect the Donbass republics, and to defend Russia’s own security amid NATO’s eastward expansion. The West condemned the attack and imposed harsh sanctions on Moscow, with dozens of major brands quickly deciding to exit the Russian market in protest.

Russia’s ruling party suggests nationalization of foreign businesses

United Russia wants to nationalize the production of enterprises leaving the Russian market over Ukraine

Russia’s ruling party has come up with the idea of nationalizing the production of companies announcing their departure from the Russian market during the military offensive in Ukraine.

Since the launch of the military operation, dozens of international enterprises have revealed their intention to cease operations in Russia, and the list is constantly growing. The secretary of United Russia’s general council, Andrey Turchak, called these actions “stabs in the back,” and warned of “tough retaliatory measures.”

“United Russia proposes to nationalize the production of those companies which announce their departure and the closure of production in Russia during a special operation in Ukraine. This is an extreme measure, but we will not tolerate stabs in the back, and we will protect our people,” Turchak said in a statement.

He called the companies’ decision to leave Russia “a premeditated bankruptcy,” “a purely political decision,” and part of a “sanction war against Russia.” Therefore, he argued, the main task of the Russian authorities is to “to preserve jobs” and not let the economy “be destroyed from within.”

“This is a real war, and not against Russia as a whole, but against citizens. We will not look at it indifferently. We will take tough retaliatory measures, acting in accordance with the laws of war,” Turchak said.

The economic sanctions imposed on Moscow by Western countries in response to Russia’s offensive in Ukraine included cutting off major Russian banks from SWIFT and freezing their foreign assets. Restrictions have also been placed on certain Russian imports. These measures forced Moscow to look for ways to minimize the damage.

On Monday, the government issued a decree saying Russian citizens and companies, the state itself, and its regions and municipalities would have to pay for obligations to foreign creditors from “unfriendly” countries in rubles. Russian companies that want to work with firms from these countries will have to apply for government permission.

Earlier this month, officials from Russia’s Transport Ministry reportedly discussed the possibility of nationalizing Airbus and Boeing planes. This measure could be used as a way of combating the EU’s ban on selling and leasing aircraft to Russian airlines.

Moscow explained its decision to launch a military attack on Ukraine by the need to “demilitarize” the country, to protect Donbass, and to defend its own security amid NATO expansion. Ukraine denies that it had any plans to retake the region by force and blasted Russia for what it called an “unprovoked” attack.

Germany warns against sanctioning ‘essential’ Russian oil and gas

Chancellor Olaf Scholz says refusing to ban Russian energy imports is a “conscious decision”

Despite levying punishing economic sanctions on Russia, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Monday that Europe needs to keep importing Russian oil and gas, which he said are “essential” for the continent’s energy security.

“At the moment, Europe’s supply of energy for heat generation, mobility, power supply and industry cannot be secured in any other way,” than by importing from Russia, read an official statement from Scholz’ office. “It is therefore of essential importance for the provision of public services and the daily lives of our citizens.”

Germany relies on Russia for around 55% of its total gas supply, while the EU imports more than half of all its energy products. Of these imports, Russia supplies 41% of gas, 46% of coal, and 27% of oil.

The EU, therefore, has been reluctant to sanction Russian energy in response to the conflict in Ukraine, even while hitting Moscow with unprecedented restrictions, closing its airspace to Russian flights, banning Russian media, and supplying arms to Ukraine.

For Germany, ensuring the continued flow of oil and gas is even more critical. The country’s investment in wind power has failed to deliver enough energy to make up for coal plant closures, and its last three nuclear plants are slated to close by the end of this year. The Nord Stream 2 pipeline was set to shore up Germany’s energy needs with cheap natural gas from Russia, until Berlin cancelled its certification prior to Russia’s military offensive in Ukraine.

Germany is currently moving to reduce its reliance on Russian gas, with Economy Minister Robert Habeck announcing on Saturday that it would build two Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminals to allow imports from suppliers like the United States. Meanwhile, Germany is already exceeding the targets set out by the EU’s 2030 plan, which calls for 32% of all energy to be generated from renewable sources.

“The German government has been working hard for months with its partners within the European Union and beyond to develop alternatives to Russian energy,” Scholz’ statement continued. “However, this cannot be done overnight. That is why it is a conscious decision on our part to continue the activities of business enterprises in the area of energy supply with Russia.”
