What is usually ignored is during trials match-grade M-14s were used against out of the box Armalites so the black rifles would look bad.

Then there's the part were majority of the ammo was using surplus artillery shell propellent salvaged by Olin-Matheson Corp and not the pelletized IMR specified by Colt. Add the insult to injury where a gas-operated rifle getting clogged by the surplus junk had one cleaning kit available per squad.
