Volcano erupts in Papua New Guinea

Japanese meteorologists are studying whether the eruption could trigger a tsunami and whether it could cover Japan

TOKYO, 8 March. /TASS/. A powerful volcanic eruption occurred on Tuesday on the island of Manam in Papua New Guinea. This was reported by the Japanese newspaper Nikkei .

At the moment, Japanese meteorologists are studying whether the eruption can trigger a tsunami, and whether it can cover the territory of Japan.

The volcano threw a column of ash up to 15,000 meters into the air, according to the Volcanic Ash Advisory Board in Darwin (Australia).

According to the agency, after the release of ash and gas, volcanic activity remains insignificant, and no increase in activity was recorded.

Manam, located on the island of the same name, 13 km off the northern coast of Papua New Guinea, near the city of Bogia, is one of the most active volcanoes in Papua New Guinea. Its last eruption was recorded in 2013. According to the 2005 census, about 11 thousand people live on the island.
