Looks do matter to a certain extent. Perhaps appearance would be a better term, because I don't mean so much physical attractiveness, but personal hygiene and grooming, facial expressions and such. After 60+ years of dealing with people, I can recognize the 'look' of crazy with a high degree of accuracy.
