Banning Russian oil imports would grind Germany to a halt, minister warns

Germany depends on Russian energy, and will not follow US and UK in banning imports, top diplomat says German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Tuesday that her country would “not be able to move” without Russian oil imports. While the UK and US announced they would cease buying Moscow’s oil, Germany is too reliant to quit.

"A third of our oil imports come from Russia," Baerbock told the video channel of the newspaper Bild. “If we stopped these straight away, then tomorrow we would not be able to move in Germany anymore.”

“We are trying to do everything we can to stop this war,” Baerbock continued, referring to the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, before claiming that Russian President Vladimir Putin is currently “unstoppable.”

Baerbock is a member of the Green Party, and was a supporter of shutting down Germany’s remaining three nuclear plants, currently slated for closure by the end of this year.

Baerbock also opposed the certification of the Russia-Germany Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline months before Russia launched its military offensive in Ukraine. Once open conflict began last month, her coalition government quickly froze certification of the pipeline.

However, Germany’s government has sought to put the brakes on any further sanctioning of Russian energy. On Monday, Chancellor Olaf Scholz issued a statement describing Russian oil and gas as “essential” for European energy security.

“At the moment, Europe’s supply of energy for heat generation, mobility, power supply and industry cannot be secured in any other way,” than by importing from Russia, the statement read. “It is therefore of essential importance for the provision of public services and the daily lives of our citizens.”

In addition to counting on Russia for a third of its imported oil, Germany relies on Russia for more than half of its total gas supply.

Banning Russian energy imports is therefore far less tenable in Germany than in the US or UK, both of which issued bans on Tuesday. London banned oil imports, while Washington banned both oil and gas. However, both countries source only around 8% of their oil from Russia, with the UK importing 4% of its gas supply from Russia and the US importing next to zero.

Compounding Germany’s reliance is the fact that the country’s push toward green energy hasn’t yielded the desired results. Coal plants were restarted last year as there wasn’t enough wind to power the country’s windmills, and even before the current spike in energy costs as a result of sanctions and market uncertainty over Ukraine, German electricity costs were already the highest in the world and rising.

Yet as an EU member, Germany will eventually see itself weaned off Russian fuels. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Tuesday that the EU would reduce its demand for Russian gas by two thirds before the end of the year, and phase out Russian fossil fuels before 2030.

US comments on Ukrainian 'biolabs'

Nuland and her spouse need to be judges as traitors to the world massive deaths in ukraine

Washington confirms it is working with Kiev to prevent Russia from accessing Ukraine’s biolaboratories

Top US diplomat has confirmed that Washington has been involved in an effort to make sure no “materials” Ukraine keeps in its biolabs end up with the Russian military.

“Ukraine has biological research facilities, which, in fact, we are now quite concerned…Russian troops, Russian forces maybe seeking to gain control of,” US State Under Secretary Victoria Nuland said on Tuesday as she testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“We’re working with Ukranians on how they can prevent any of those research materials from falling into the hands of Russian forces should they approach,” she added.

The Russian military previously claimed that the Ukrainian authorities have been hastily destroying dangerous materials, including highly pathogenic bacterial and viral agents, they allegedly kept in laboratories linked to the Pentagon.

On Monday, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov claimed that the documents seen by the Russian military suggest that some of these laboratories worked with anthrax and the plague among other infections. Kirillov also alleged that “the only reason” why Kiev had reportedly moved to destroy the materials was out of concern that Russian experts “will highly likely prove Ukraine and the US have been in violation of the Biological Weapons Convention” once they study the samples.

While Moscow has expressed concerns over the alleged development of bioweapons in Ukraine,Nuland has appeared to preemptively blame Russia for any potential release of hazardous materials amid the ongoing military conflict.

Nuland agreed with Senator Marco Rubio that if a chemical or biological “incident” or “attack” takes place in Ukraine, then Russia would be the culprit.

“There is no doubt in my mind, Senator, and it is classic Russian technique to blame on the other guy what they’re planning to do themselves,” she said.

Kiev has denied it was designing bioweapons, while the Pentagon insisted that speculations about its possible involvement in such programs in the former Soviet states was part of Russian “disinformation.”

Pentagon responds to Poland’s fighter jets proposal for Ukraine

Washington has warned that warsaws plan to hand over Soviet-made MiG-29 jets to Ukraine may threaten the “entire NATO” alliance

Poland is saying fuck off in the nicest way posdsible

A plan under which the US would transfer Polish-owned planes to Ukraine risks dragging NATO directly into a military conflict between Kiev and Moscow, the Pentagon said, as it seemingly rejected a deal earlier proposed by Warsaw.

On Tuesday, Poland announced that it was ready to deploy “immediately and free of charge” its fleet of MiG-29 jets to a NATO base in Germany and hand them over to the US military. In return, Washington would have provided Warsaw with “used aircraft with corresponding operational capabilities” to backfill its fleet.

Responding to the proposed deal later on Tuesday, the Pentagon signaled that it was reluctant to play any role in the affair.

“The prospect of fighter jets 'at the disposal of the Government of the United States of America' departing from a U.S./NATO base in Germany to fly into airspace that is contested with Russia over Ukraine raises serious concerns for the entire NATO alliance,” Pentagon spokesman John F. Kirby said.

Pointing to potential “logistical challenges” such a plan may encounter, Kirby said that it was “not clear” for the Pentagon whether the action was warranted.

“We do not believe Poland’s proposal is a tenable one,” the official noted, adding that Washington would continue to discuss the issue with Poland and other NATO member-states. At the same time, he said that Poland was in its right to give its own warplanes to Ukraine, adding that the decision was “ultimately one for the Polish government.”

Last week, Polish President Andrzej Duda appeared to rule out the idea that Warsaw would give fighter jets to Ukraine on its own. “We are not sending any jets to Ukraine because that would open a military interference in the Ukrainian conflict. We are not joining that conflict,” Duda said at a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg last Tuesday.

Kiev has been asking the West to supply warplanes and anti-aircraft systems drones as the Russian offensive in Ukraine goes into its second week.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also urged NATO to implement a “no-fly zone” over the country. However, the alliance has refused to do so, pointing out that such a move would result in a “full-fledged war in Europe involving many more countries.”

Poland knows that Blinken and Pentagon want to blame any violation of NATO on them, imho

Which is exactly what Poland has been saying from day one.

Blinken kept on saying “we’ll backfill Polands jets”

Blinken shouldnt be talking on behalf if the Pentagon, hes been spreading the disinfo that Poland would supply jets. When the entire government of Poland said we dont want anything to do with it and its disinfo that we will do this.

Why is Blinken trying to negotiate on behalf of NATO when he has no authority. He’s worst SoS ever!

I guess the Pentagon learned their lesson with the Afghanistan pullout.

They should tell Blinken to STFU now

Joining NATO would further destabilize Ukraine situation – Sweden

The prime minister warns nation against trying to join NATO amid Ukraine conflict

No shit sherlocks

Swedish PM Magdalena Andersson has warned that submitting an application to join NATO at this time would “further destabilize the situation in Europe.” She made the comment during a press conference on Tuesday, implying that further steps toward joining NATO would have a “negative impact” on the security situation in Ukraine.

While Andersson described Russia’s actions in Ukraine as “an increasingly brutal and indiscriminate warfare that affects civilians,” denouncing the conflict as “illegal” and calling for violence against civilians to stop “immediately,”she did not seem interested in further entangling Sweden in the conflict. Stockholm has successfully delivered military equipment, she explained, and appears to be looking for further ways to support Kiev – such as strengthening its resistance to cyber-attacks – that don’t run the risk of directly involving the nation in hostilities.

Sweden and Finland recently wrote a joint letter to the other member of the EU reminding them of the common defense clause within the Treaty of Lisbon, which requires EU countries to provide mutual support and assistance “should a Member State be subjected to an armed attack on its territory.”

The clause serves the same purpose as NATO’s Article 5, which declares that an attack on one NATO state is considered an attack on all members and will be retaliated against accordingly.

Sweden’s center-right opposition parties have long sought NATO membership for the country, a move the governing Social Democrats have historically opposed. While Andersson acknowledged on Saturday that the “security situation” had been “altered in a dramatic way,” and NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg has hinted the door is open to a quick accession to the alliance, no public plans have been made to join.

Andersson declined on Tuesday to answer questions regarding how Sweden’s opinion on NATO membership would change if Finland joined, however. While Sweden’s neighbor has expressed renewed interest in becoming part of the alliance, with a quorum of citizens signing a petition to bring the question of membership before Parliament last week, the majority of Finnish MPs questioned by local media on Tuesday declined to go on record with their opinions about entering NATO.

EU nations, including Sweden, were placed on a list of “unfriendly countries” by Russia on Monday after the bloc imposed a sweeping sanctions regime on Moscow following the offensive in Ukraine.

Andersson noted that the designation would likely have “consequences” for the Swedish economy. In addition to the EU and Five Eyes countries, the list includes Iceland, South Korea, Norway, Singapore, Switzerland, Japan, Montenegro, San Marino, and Taiwan.

Russian armored train spotted in Ukraine (VIDEOS)

The old-fashioned piece of hardwarehelped to evacuate foreign nationals from combat zone

A Russian armored train has been spotted operating in Ukraine’s south amid the ongoing large-scale military operation launched by Moscow in the neighboring country. The old-school hardware was used to provide cover for foreign nationals, seeking to evacuate from Ukraine, Zvezda TV reported Tuesday.

The train escorted some 248 foreign nationals from Ukraine’s Kherson region into the town of Armyansk, located in the northernmost part of Russia’s Crimean Peninsula. Footage circulated by Zvezda shows the train includes a soft locomotive, an armored car, an open armored platform, as well as an anti-aircraft carriage with multiple AA-guns and other cars.

Another video, said to have been filmed by onlookers outside Melitopol, shows the train passing through the outskirts of the Ukrainian town. The rare sight attracted a few onlookers, with some waving to Russian soldiers, while the woman filming the video let out an expletives-laden rant, shouting “Glory to Ukraine!” multiple times.

Moscow launched large-scale offensive against Ukraine back on February 24, with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin explaining it was the only option left to protect the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Lugansk in Ukraine’s east from Kiev’s attacks. Putin also outlined the goals of “denazification” and “demilitarization” of the neighboring country.

Kiev has insisted the attack was “unprovoked”, denying having plans to re-conquer the republics. The Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics split from Ukraine following the 2014 Maidan coup, which ousted the country’s democratically-elected government.
