US moves additional anti-missile batteries to Poland
The US military has claimed that relocated air defense units won’t be used in any “offensive operations”
The Pentagon has said it would movetwo Patriot anti-missile batteries to Poland at Warsaw’s “invitation.” The US military has claimed that the deployment was purely defensive in nature.

“This defensive deployment is being conducted proactively to counter any potential threat to US and Allied forces and NATO territory,” the United States European Command (EUCOM) said in a statement on Tuesday.
The combatant command further stressed that the mobile missile systems, which use guided munitions to intercept and destroy hostile targets, are “a prudent force protection measure” that “in no way support any offensive operations.”
Since the start of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine on February 24, Poland has become one of the most vocal proponents of increased military assistance to Ukraine. Earlier on Tuesday, Warsaw suggested handing over its entire fleet of Soviet-built MiG-29 jets to the Pentagon so that Washington could then transfer the warplanes to Ukraine. The scheme envisioned a handover of the Polish-owned jets at a NATO military base in Germany, where the US was supposed to take over the mission and fly the craft into Ukraine. In return, Warsaw hoped to receive used fighters with similar capabilities from the US.
The proposal was rejected by Washington later on Tuesday. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby stated that the proposed deal was not “tenable,” as the implementation of the plan risked dragging NATO into the military conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
Kiev has repeatedly appealed to NATO to declare a no-fly zone over its territory – though to no avail. The bloc has argued that such a commitment would likely draw other European countries into the hostilities, sparking a “full-fledged war” on the continent.

The UK has threatened criminal penalties for any Russian planes who violate the country’s airspace. The aircraft could be detained under a new order issued after Britain fully closed its skies to all Russian flights.
Citing what he deemed an “unprovoked, premeditated attack against a sovereign democratic state” by Russia, British Transport Secretary Grant Shapps suggested that Russian aircraft could be hit with criminal charges should they fly over Britain.
“I have made it a criminal offence for ANY Russian aircraft to enter UK airspace and now [Her Majesty’s Government] can detain these jets,” Shapps said in a tweet, vowing to “suffocate Putin's cronies’ ability to continue living as normal while thousands of innocent people die.”
While the UK already closed its airspace to Russian flights in late February, London’s most recent announcement states that “non-compliance” with that order “may give rise to a criminal offense” for crews, while hinting at “unprecedented package of further sanctions” in the future.
The UK has joined a long list of Western nations and allies that have closed their airspace to Russian flights, each in retaliation to Moscow’s attack on Ukraine late last month, which President Vladimir Putin says is aimed at “demilitarizing” and “denazifying” the government in Kiev. Ukraine, meanwhile, has denounced the offensive as “unprovoked,” denying allegations that it had plans to reclaim the break-away Donbass region by force.
While British airspace remains completely shut off to Russian planes, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has also resisted calls to allow Ukrainian refugees to seek safety in the UK. The PM has defended the policy, arguing that while his country is “very, very generous,” it must maintain “control” over its territory and be able to properly vet those fleeing the fighting.

President Joe Biden has claimed that Moscow is entirely to blame for surging US gasoline prices, conceding he won’t be able to blunt runaway inflation at the pump. This comes after the US moved to ban imports of Russian oil and natural gas.
Asked about the outlook for prices at the pump on Tuesday, Biden said, “It’s gonna go up.” “Can’t do much right now. Russia’s responsible,” the president added, when asked about his plan to deal with the spike.
The exchange came after Biden announced a ban on US imports of Russian energy earlier on Tuesday, prompting further gains in oil and gasoline futures prices. Crude rose to a 13-year high on Monday, and US gasoline prices at the pump set an all-time high, averaging $4.17 per gallon.
The import ban aims to “further inflict pain” on Russian President Vladimir Putin for launching an invasion of Ukraine, Biden said. He acknowledged that the move “is not without cost here at home,” but he promised, “I’m going to do everything I can to minimize Putin’s price hike here at home.”
Biden has faced criticism from Republicans arguing that the rising gas prices is the direct consequence of the president’s climate agenda. Biden has rejected the accusation. "It’s simply not true that my administration or policies are holding back domestic energy production. That’s simply not true," he said on Tuesday.

Ukrainian MP opens ‘safari’ on Russian official aiding civilians

Ukrainian MP with the European Solidarity party Alexey Goncharenko has urged the country’s citizens to hunt down senior Russian official Natalia Poklonskaya. The lawmaker announced a “safari” on the deputy director of the Rossotrudnichestvo federal agency, who has been distributing humanitarian aid in Ukraine’s Kherson region, in a Telegram post on Tuesday.
“The Ukrainians who should take on the capture of Natalia Poklonskaya. If you see her somewhere, feel free to grab her. Nobody in Russia would miss her. Otherwise, Poklonskaya would not even have come here in the first place. Safari is declared open,” Goncharenko said.
The lawmaker also dismissed the aid distributed by Poklonskaya as a “half bag of discounted goods,” branding the official “a piece of carrion pretending to be a great philanthropist.” Poklonskaya arrived in the Kherson region along with a humanitarian mission, distributing aid among the civilians in an area seized by the Russian military during the offensive launched on February 24.
Goncharenko is notorious for his strong anti-Russian stance, with the politician repeatedly producing hateful remarks against Moscow long before the ongoing conflict kicked off. The politician has been actively involved in the 2014 Maidan events and the turmoil that ensued.
He took an active part in suppressing pro-Russian protests in his native city of Odessa, namely in May 2 2014 events, that culminated indozens of pro-Russian activists getting burned alivewhen cornered at the local trade unions house. The politician has been cleared of any allegations of being involved in the massacre by a Ukrainian court. No culprits behind the mass-murder have ever been established.
Ex-Ukrainian prosecutor-turned Russian official Poklonskaya rose to prominence back in 2014 as well, taking a solid pro-Russia stance amid the Maidan turmoil. She took an active part in the subsequent Crimea events, when the peninsula broke off from Ukraine and joined Russia via a referendum. While her defection scored her high treason charges in Ukraine, she also got an army of internet admirers, who produced assorted memes and comics involving the ex-prosecutor.

China urges Pentagon to open up about ‘biolabs’ in Ukraine

China’s foreign ministry has called on the US to disclose information on the Pentagon’s alleged biological laboratories in Ukraine “as soon as possible”.
On Monday, the Russian military said Ukrainian authorities had been destroying pathogens studied at its laboratories. Moscow claimed that 30 US-financed Ukrainian biolabs have been actively cooperating with the American military.
Kiev has denied developing bioweapons. According to the website of the US embassy in Kiev, the US Department of Defense’s Biological Threat Reduction Program only “collaborates with partner countries to counter the threat of outbreaks” of infectious diseases. In 2020, the embassy called such theories about US-funded biolabs in Ukraine "disinformation."
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, however, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian claimed that, according to his country’s information, the laboratories in Ukraine are just “a tip of an iceberg” and that the US Department of Defense “controls 336 biological laboratories in 30 countries around the world.” This is done under the pretext of “cooperating to reduce biosecurity risks” and “strengthening global public health,” Zhao said.
It is the first time that Beijing has disclosed the alleged figure. Zhao said that according to data “released by the United States itself,” there are 26 US laboratories in Ukraine. In light of Russia’s military offensive in the country, he urged “all parties concerned” to ensure the safety of the labs.
“In particular, the United States, as the party which knows these laboratories best, should publish the relevant details as soon as possible, including which viruses are stored and which research has been carried out,” he said.
He claimed the US “has been exclusively obstructing” the establishment of an independent verification mechanism. Such behavior, Zhao said, “further aggravates the concerns of the international community.”
According to a report in The Rio Times, the US embassy inUkraine deleted all information about Pentagon-financed bio-labs in the country from its website on February 26. However, journalist Dilyana Gaytandzhieva claimed embassy staff forgot to remove a document showing that the Pentagon is funding two new biolabs in Kiev and Odessa.
“Ukraine has no control over the military biolabs. The Ukrainian government is not allowed to release sensitive information about the program,” the Brazilian news outlet claimed.
Over the past 20 years, the Science and Technology Center in Ukraine, jointly established with the United States,invested over $285 million in about 1,850 projects carried out by scientists who, according to Gaytandzhieva, previously worked on the development of weapons of mass destruction.
US authorities are yet to comment on the latest claims.

US spy chief predicts ‘uglier’ urban fighting as Russian offensive presses ahead with ‘scant regard for civilian casualties’
Ukraine faces an “ugly next few weeks” as Russia’s military offensive intensifies, leading to increasingly fierce urban fighting and more civilian casualties, CIA director William Burns told US lawmakers on Tuesday.
Testifying in a House Intelligence Committee hearing, Burns argued that President Vladimir Putin is “angry and frustrated” over the slow progress of Russia’s Ukraine campaign and has “no sustainable political end game in the face of what’s going to continue to be fierce resistance from the Ukrainians.”
“Where that leads, I think, is for an ugly next few weeks in which he doubles down . . . with scant regard for civilian casualties, in which urban fighting can get even uglier,” Burns said. “The one thing I’m absolutely convinced of and I think our analysts across the intelligence community are absolutely convinced of is, the Ukrainians are going to continue to resist fiercely and effectively.”
Putin has said Russia attacked Ukraine to protect the breakaway Donetsk (DPR) and Lugansk (LPR) People’s Republics and to “demilitarize and denazify” Kiev amid a NATO-backed weapons buildup. He also claimed that the offensive is aimed only at military targets.
Burns accused Putin of predicating the Ukraine offensive on erroneous assumptions about Kiev’s fighting prowess and Western Europe’s response. He said Putin also bet that amassing large foreign currency reserves would “sanctions-proof” the Russian economy and that military modernization would enable a “quick, decisive victory at minimal cost.”
He's been proven wrong on every count,” Burns claimed. “Those assumptions have proved to be profoundly flawed over the last 12 days of conflict.” He added that rather than seizing Kiev within two days, as allegedly planned, Russia’s military has been unable to fully encircle the Ukrainian capital after nearly two weeks of fighting.
Burns blamed the war on Putin’s “deep personal conviction” to dominate and control Ukraine. “He’s been stewing in a combustible combination of grievance and ambition for many years,” the CIA director said, adding, “He doesn’t believe Ukraine is a real country. He’s dead wrong about that. Real countries fight back.”
Lt. General Scott Berrier, director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, accused Russia’s military of having a “bad plan” in Ukraine. He claimed Moscow has suffered 2,000 to 4,000 troop deaths so far. However, he conceded that the estimate was made with “low confidence” and was based on “some intelligence sources but also open source.”
Burns said Russian military casualties in Ukraine have been far higher than Putin anticipated. “He’s likely to double down and try to grind down the Ukrainian military with no regard for civilian casualties,” the CIA director added.
