WASHINGTON (7News) — Virginia McLaurin, one of DC’s most famous citizens, is celebrating her 113th birthday.

 

McLaurin gained national attention when she visited and danced with President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama at the White House.

 

After the White House visit, McLaurin said she could finally die happy after meeting the Obamas.

 

She told The Associated Press that when she saw the president and first lady Michelle Obama in the flesh, “I was so happy, I started dancing.”

 

In 2016, the DC Council honored McLaurin in the Council Chamber with a Ceremonial Resolution on her 107th birthday.

 

The Council honored her not just for her age, but “for her contributions as a foster grandparent, school volunteer, affordable housing advocate, seamstress, and au pair and for her outstanding years of public service in the District of Columbia.”

The Council noted that "she was 9 when the Spanish flu epidemic hit, & 106 when she danced with the Obamas."

 

In 2018, she celebrated her 109th with the Harlem Globetrotters and the students at Brightwood Elementary School in Northwest Washington.

 

And in 2020, the Globetrotters surprised her at her home to give her a few gifts including a new jersey, a basketball, and a $111 gift card to TGI Friday's.

 

McLaurin told 7News reporter Caroline Patrickis that she’s proud to be called “Grandma Virginia.”

 

McLaurin was born in Cheraw, South Carolina, in 1909, and moved to DC in 1939, according to the DC Council resolution. She lives in the Petworth neighborhood in Ward 4.
