"Rational" and "reasonable" responses are often granted lower priority when executive processes demanding "survival" are invoked. The fear exhibited by others can be contagious and uncontrollable - they may act irrationally, panic, speed away. You may regret not retrieving a companion, but your memories are enough to convince you that you'd be bleeding out next to him or her no matter what you tried.

The more of our enemy that is revealed and exposed the surer we can be of the cleanup. Let it go to the USSC, the UNSC, wherever the corruption takes us. Some revelations may disappoint in the short term, but this is like eradicating cancer - the more that is exposed and eradicated the easier the post-procedure healing.
