Israel not about to impose sanctions on Russia or its oligarchs, officials say
Lapid and other governmental bodies working to close loopholes, but Jerusalem says it has no legal ability to declare sanctions — which it currently doesn’t want to do in any case
Israel is not currently preparing sanctions on Moscow or Russian oligarchs, senior Israeli officials told The Times of Israel on Tuesday.
The clarifications came a day after Foreign Minister Yair Lapid declared in Slovakia that “Israel will not be a route to bypass sanctions imposed on Russia by the United States and other Western countries.”
British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss tweeted after his remarks that she welcomes “news from @YairLapid that Israel will support sanctions against Russia.”
But that support does not mean the imposition of Israeli sanctions, the officials said. Instead, Lapid’s statements were in line with Israel’s stance to this point, in which it has sought to maintain open lines of communication with both Moscow and Kyiv while showing support for Western positions without necessarily joining them.
There is currently no legal structure in Israel that would allow for Israeli sanctions on assets and citizens of a state that is not defined by law as an enemy country.
Such a law could theoretically be passed in the future.

Moreover, Israel cannot bar Israeli citizens like Roman Abramovich from entering the country if there is no arrest warrant out for them, nor can it legally confiscate property in Israel.
Abramovich, who is under UK sanctions, was spotted at Ben Gurion Airport’s VIP terminal on Monday evening, leaving Israel for Russia after apparently spending less than 24 hours in the country. A Twitter account that tracks the movement of Abramovich’s six aircraft showed that a Gulfstream G650 belonging to Abramovich landed in Tel Aviv at around 9 p.m. local time Sunday, having taken off from Moscow.

Judicial Watch Files Amicus Curiae Brief to Overturn Sanctions against Lawyers in 2020 Election Challenges
Judicial Watch announced today it filed an amicus curiae (friend of the court) brief in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit supporting Sidney Powell’s appeal of sanctions levied against her and her associates in Michigan 2020 election challenges. Judicial Watch argues the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan abused its discretion in sanctioning Powell and other lawyers involved in the case.
This Judicial Watch amicus brief comes in the case King, et al. v. Whitmer, et al., (Appeal No. 21-1786), in which Powell and other attorneys ask the appeals court to reverse the lower court’s order sanctioning them.
Judicial Watch argues that improperly sanctioning lawyers for bringing civil rights litigation on elections will have a chilling effect:
Voting and election litigation constitute some of the most contentious, political forms of civil rights litigation. These qualities are even more acute in postelection disputes where litigation schedules are compressed and available information is limited and often dynamic. Nevertheless, the prosecution (and defense) of election disputes play an important role in our electoral and political process.
As a conservative advocacy group that often brings election and voting lawsuits, including those to enforce federal and state election integrity laws, Judicial Watch has a particular interest in the issues at stake here. If the decision of the district court is affirmed, and the Appellants are sanctioned, the precedent will be weaponized to threaten legitimate parties prosecuting election integrity claims.
“Courts sanctioning lawyers pursuing election law claims in the heat of an election is a dangerous game that could allow election corruption to go unchecked,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “The partisan retaliation and harassment of lawyers involved in litigating the 2020 election dispute is unprecedented and undermines the rule of law – and courts should not take part in it.”

Hunter Biden ex-partner tries to avoid starting prison sentence, prosecutors object strenuously
Devon Archer throws up several more appeals trying to avoid the prison sentence, asset forfeiture he received last month.
Hunter Biden's ex-business partner was convicted nearly four years ago of securities fraud and still he has not spent a day in prison. And now Devon Archer's lawyers are trying to delay his punishment yet again with a new appeal that did not amuse federal prosecutors.
Archer faces one year and one day in prison and was ordered last month to pay financial penalties of $15 million and over $43 million in restitution.
His arguments to appeal and postpone serving prison time have no merit, the U.S. attorney's office in Manhattan told the trial judge Monday.
"Archer falls far short of meeting his burden of establishing the necessary 'substantial question of law or fact' to justify bail pending appeal or a stay of forfeiture," the prosecutors wrote in their motion.

Archer and two co-defendants were found guilty in 2018 of defrauding an impoverished Indian tribe of $60 million in a bond scheme. His lawyers now argue his prison sentence and monetary penalty are too severe because he may not have known the entire extent of the crime.
Prosecutors scoffed at that argument, saying Archer knew about the bond issuances, bought $15 million of bonds with his own money, and made "varied lies to banks" and his corporate board to further the scheme.
"It would make no sense to find that he knew about only one aspect of the scheme," the prosecutors argued. "Archer’s guilt having already been proven beyond a reasonable doubt, the Court was then bound by the evidence – not the jury’s verdict – to find that the entirety of the scheme was foreseeable to Archer."
They also said: "In short, the defendant’s motion for a stay should be denied."
Archer was convicted along with two other people in 2018 of "conspiracy to commit securities fraud and securities fraud" after a trial that lasted more than a month.
Before being arrested, Archer served with Hunter Biden on the board of Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings.
Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, has not been connected to the tribal fraud scheme for which Archer was sentenced.
A 2020 report from the Senate's Finance and Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committees shows Archer's close ties to the Biden family.
Archer is mentioned in the second paragraph of the report, 42 times total.
"On April 16, 2014, [then]Vice President Biden met with his son’s business partner, Devon Archer, at the White House. Five days later, Vice President Biden visited Ukraine," the report states, adding that within a month Archer and Hunter Biden were appointed to the Burisma board.
"Over the course of the next several years, Hunter Biden and Devon Archer were paid millions of dollars from a corrupt Ukrainian oligarch for their participation on the board," the 87-page report alleges.

Inflation in Germany was a major contributory factor behind World War II, and in the 1980s inflation in America went over 20%. In the UK, interest rates hit 17% and home buyers were delighted if they could borrow money at a mere 15%. I suspect that if inflation got anywhere near to that level there would be ten million British families finding themselves on the street – homeless and penniless.

And yet, as with the climate change fraud and the covid fraud, commitment to these absurd sanctions has been global. Numerous companies are giving in to pressure from tiny but noisy groups on social media and have severed all ties with Russia. Shareholders have not been asked if they agree with what is being done in their names, though in a number of cases the damage done to the companies involved will be catastrophic and possibly terminal.

"The Great Jewish Oligarchs' Escape": Russian Oligarchs Flee to Israel in Bid to Dodge Sanctions
Russian-Jewish oligarchs have been fleeing to Israel en masse over the past few weeks in a last minute effort to dodge US and EU sanctions, according to Israeli media reports.

At least 14 private jets from Russia have landed at Ben Gurion Airport in Israel, per a report by The Times of Israel.
The report cited a broadcast by Israel's Channel 12, which said that a number of rented private planes were coming from Russia and were landing in Israel.
The planes' owners were unidentified and this has led to speculation that oligarchs may be looking at ways to slip around sanctions.
