Michael Flynn Says Ukraine's Independence 'Not Vital' to U.S. Interests
Michael Flynn, the disgraced former national security adviser who served under Donald Trump, has suggested that the U.S. should not get involved in Russia's invasion of Ukraine as independence for the Eastern European country is not a "vital" foreign policy concern.
Flynn, a former Army general turned major figure in the QAnon movement, questioned why the U.S. should be concerned with the conflict.
The conspiracy theorist went on to suggest that Ukraine should remain "neutral" and not join up with NATO as Putin could decide to further target other countries in the coalition who have assisted it during the war.
Flynn, who was pardoned by Trump after pleading guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russia amid the Robert Mueller investigation, posted the remarks on the Telegram messaging service app, where he has more than 302,000 followers.
"I want our White House to clearly and simply articulate the national security interests the United States has given the situation in the Ukraine," Flynn said.
"Ukraine being an independent nation is a worthy goal for Ukraine, but Ukraine's independence is not vital to the United States. Ukraine is not a member of NATO, and, as things stand with the vast expansion of NATO, we now have 28 other nations to defend if only one of them is attacked.
"What if Putin decides to attack one of these Ukrainian NATO member states for transferring arms to Ukraine that are killing Russian soldiers? This war in Europe was completely avoidable had we worked to assure Ukraine neutrality…Globally, China is the big winner," he added.
Flynn's comments echo remarks previously made by Fox News host Tucker Carlson.
Carlson, who has been accused of mirroring Russian propaganda on his show during the Ukraine conflict, questioned why he should criticize Putin for launching the unprovoked attack or why Americans should be outraged as the Russian president was not responsible for a number of domestic issues conservatives have voiced concerns over down the years.
"Has Putin ever called me a racist? Has he threatened to get me fired for disagreeing with him?" Carlson said during a February 22 show ahead of the full-scale invasion.
"Has he shipped every middle-class job in my town to Russia? Did he manufacture a worldwide pandemic that wrecked my business and kept me indoors for two years? Is he teaching my children to embrace racial discrimination?"
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has said it now seems unlikely Ukraine will join NATO as the war with Russia continues.
"We realized that Ukraine will not become a member of NATO. We understand this, we are adequate people," he said in a video posted Tuesday.
"Kyiv needs new formats of interaction with the West and separate security guarantees."
A number of experts raised the issue of whether Ukraine should remain neutral— such as Switzerland, Finland or Sweden—and not join NATO amid the Russia conflict.
Fotios Moustakis, associate professor in strategic studies at the University of Plymouth, told Al Jazeera that Ukraine neutrality is the "panacea" to solving the crisis.
Moustaki also suggested Finland, whose neutral position has weakened in recent decades, including joining the European Union and providing assistance with NATO military operations, is the "model that provides a reasonable path" in negotiations to end the war.
Graham Gill, professor emeritus at the University of Sydney, added that Ukraine neutrality would "go a long way" towards solving the crisis in Europe.
"In his ideal world, Putin may have dreamed of a Ukraine united with Russia in a single overarching state form, but events of the last weeks have shown that is a highly unlikely outcome," Gill said.

A video showing a woman's bizarre conspiracy theory about the hidden code contained in the phrase "COVID-19" has gone viral.
The video was posted on Twitter on Monday by The Good Liars, a comedy duo made up of Jason Selvig and Davram Stiefler.
The pair regularly interview members of the public to get their views on controversial topics. In this instance, they were interviewing protestors who are part of the Trucker Convoy now in Washington.
The Twitter video has over 1 million views and the woman has been widely mocked by viewers in the comment section.
She insisted that COVID-19 was a coded message for "see sheep surrender," a conspiracy theory that was already debunked by a Reuters fact-check report in 2020.

"When it came out it was 'corona' right?" the woman said.
"Corona is six letters, when you use gematria and say A is 1, B is 2, C is 3 and you put Corona lined up is 6-6. So that is 6-6-6.
"But we found that out, so they're saying the right-wing crazies found it out, so they changed it to COVID-19."
"Corona" was not the official name given to COVID-19, but rather a shortening of "coronavirus," a group of related RNA viruses.
The Reuters fact-check report also explained how the term COVID-19 came into use during the pandemic.
"The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) gives viruses their names according to their genetic structure and for the benefit of scientific research," the report said.
"It named the virus responsible for COVID-19 as SARS-CV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) on February 11, 2020, due to its genetic relation to SARS.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also explained the adoption of the name.
"The new name of this disease is coronavirus disease 2019, abbreviated as COVID-19. In COVID-19, 'CO' stands for 'corona', 'VI' for 'virus,' and 'D' for disease," the CDC said, as quoted by Reuters.
The woman in the video continued to explain her beliefs regarding the word COVID-19.
"[COVID-19] Which is 'C', what is this see?" the woman said while gesturing to use your eyes.
"'Ovid'… look it up. Ovid means sheep.
"'19', military code for surrender, see sheep surrender."
The Reuters fact check was in reference to a similar conspiracy theory, except this conspiracy argued that the number 19 meant surrender in ancient times.
The word "ovid" does not mean sheep. In Latin, the word for sheep is "ovis."
Ovid more often refers to a Roman poet by the name of Pūblius Ovidius Nāsō who lived during the reign of Augustus.
Regarding 19, it is not clear which military codes the woman is referring to.
The Reuters fact-check examined the symbology behind the number 19 and its use throughout history.
"According to the Encyclopedia Britannica's entry on number symbology, the number 19 was considered unlucky for ancient Babylonians, while in Islamic numerology, the number could be considered 'an important name for God'," the report said.
"No search results that point to the number's significance cite historical evidence to demonstrate that it was indeed considered the "number of surrender" by any ancient civilization."
The fact check concluded that the conspiracy theory was false and that COVID-19 did not mean "see sheep surrender" but rather "coronavirus disease 2019."

Queen Elizabeth is continuing her royal duties from Windsor Castle after she pulled out of attending the annual Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey on Monday.
On Tuesday, the monarch, 95, held an in-person audience and conducted two virtual meetings with incoming ambassadors via video link from her home in Windsor.
The monarch welcomed the Governor-General of Canada, Mary Simon, and her husband, Whit Fraser, for tea in the Oak Room at Windsor Castle
The Queen, who wore a blue floral dress and her signature pearls, appeared in good spirits during the meeting.
She also presented Enkhsukh Battumur, Ambassador from Mongolia, with his letters of credence as they spoke online. She also greeted Rukhshona Emomali, Ambassador from the Republic of Tajikistan.
The virtual engagements come one day after the Queen bowed out of the Commonwealth Day Service, which was attended by senior members of the royal family, including Prince Charles (who represented his mother at the event), Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Prince William and Kate Middleton.
