US Unexpectedly Sanctions China Officials Hours After Demanding Beijing Condemn Russia

Apparently not content with diplomatic war on one front with Russia, the Biden administration appears ready to escalate with China following on the heels of last week's persistent accusations that Beijing was mulling cooperation with Moscow on weapons resupplies for its Ukraine operation, as well as assistance on Western sanctions evasion.

Monday afternoon Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced more visa restrictions on Chinese officials related to prior charges that state authorities are overseeing the ethnic cleansing of Uighurs. It's certainly interesting timing in terms of pulling out the the human rights card, given that throughout last week the admin's China criticisms seemed exclusively focused on its "fence-sitting" over Ukraine.

Blinken called on China to "end its ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang, repressive policies in Tibet, crackdown on fundamental freedoms in Hong Kong, and human rights violations," as cited in Bloomberg.

"The United States rejects efforts by (Chinese) officials to harass, intimidate, surveil, and abduct members of ethnic and religious minority groups, including those who seek safety abroad, and U.S. citizens, who speak out on behalf of these vulnerable populations," Blinken said. "We are committed to defending human rights around the world and will continue to use all diplomatic and economic measures to promote accountability."

It's unclear as yet which and how many Chinese state officials will be impacted by the new visa restriction measures, which will effectively ban them from travel into the United States, and it's an expansion of prior Trump restrictions.

Earlier, the White House issued a statement saying - like UK prime minister Boris Johnson's words over the weekend - that Beijing must condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine and stop downplaying it.

Microsoft "Investigating" Potential Breach Of Internal Systems By Group Known For Demanding Bizarre Ransom

Microsoft is in the midst of investigating whether or not a "extortion-focused hacking group" has gained access to its internal systems, according to a Monday morning report from Vice.

The group in question, LAPSUS$, had formerly compromised companies like Ubisoft and Nvidia. In the case of Nvidia, the group made ransom demands of asking the company to "unlock aspects of its graphics cards to make them more suitable for mining cryptocurrency".

So far, the group has not made any demands of Microsoft, the report says.

But over the weekend the group put up images of what Vice says "appeared to be an internal Microsoft developer account to their Telegram channel". The shot appeared to be from an Azure DevOps account and showed projects called “Bing_UX", “Bing-Source” and “Cortana.”

The terms “mscomdev,” “microsoft,” and “msblox,” were also included in the screenshot.

The image was deleted shortly after it was posted, with an administrator of the channel writing: “Deleted for now will repost later.”

Microsoft has commented that they are "aware of the claims" and are "investigating".

The group said earlier this month that it was recruiting employees inside of companies like Microsoft. They also listed Apple and IBM as companies where they were looking for insiders to work with.

In the last 3 months alone, the group has "breached the Ministry of Health of Brazil, a slew of Brazilian and Portuguese companies, and then Nvidia and Samsung", the report wrote. They also took credit for breaching Ubisoft earlier this month.

A judge plans to end the conservatorship of child star Amanda Bynes on Tuesday after nearly nine years, according to court documents The Los Angeles Times reviewed.

The retired actress filed a request to end her conservatorship last month. Bynes is known for her roles in movies such as "Easy A" and "She's the Man," as well as Nickelodeon's "The Amanda Show."

"The court determines that the conservatorship is no longer required and that grounds for establishment of a conservatorship of the person no longer exist," Ventura County Superior Court Judge Roger Lund wrote.

"The court intends to grant the petition for termination and order the conservatorship of the person of Amanda Bynes be terminated," the filing stated.

Bynes also has a trust, but Judge Lund said it was beyond his purview.

The child star, now 35, was placed under conservatorship of her parents in 2013 after a series of erratic behaviors, including DUI incidents and drug use, ended with her attending court-ordered psychiatric care.

An attorney for Bynes' parents told TMZ that the family supports the conservatorship ending. The lawyer also said Bynes' move was not inspired by Britney Spears, whose conservatorship ended last year.

Ukraine says any deal with Russia would be put to a referendum

While hinting at progress in talks with Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday that any “historic” compromises his negotiators agreed upon would be subject to approval by the entire country in a referendum.

“I explained to all the negotiating groups: when you talk about all these changes, and they might be historic, we will not go anywhere, we will come to a referendum,” Zelensky told the Ukrainian public broadcaster in an interview.

“The people will have their say and give their answers to some kind of compromises or another. As to what they will be, that is a matter of our conversations between Ukraine and Russia,” the president added.

Zelensky was answering a question about Russia’s demands for security guarantees for the two Donbass republics and for recognition of Crimea – the peninsula that voted to join Russia in 2014, which Kiev and the West continue to consider Ukrainian territory.

Earlier in the day, Russia rejected Zelensky’s offer of a direct meeting with President Vladimir Putin, saying the talks had made “no significant progress.”

“For us to speak of a meeting between the two presidents, homework has to be done. Talks have to be held and their results agreed upon,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

Russia has also rejected calls for a ceasefire, saying such pauses had been used by Kiev to regroup and launch attacks on its troops.

Monday was the first occasion on which Zelensky had raised the idea of a referendum since Moscow sent troops into Ukraine almost a month ago. Back in December, following a call with French President Emmanuel Macron, he said he would “not rule out a referendum” of all Ukrainians regarding the disputed Donbass republics, Crimea, “and maybe, in general, on halting the war” that has been ongoing in the east of the country since 2014.

Moscow attacked its neighbor in late February, following a seven-year standoff over Ukraine’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements, and Russia’s eventual recognition of the two republics. German- and French-brokered protocols had been designed to regularize the status of those regions within the Ukrainian state.

Russia has now demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join the US-led NATO military bloc. Kiev insists the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked and has denied claims it was planning to retake the two republics by force.

China Eastern has grounded all of its Boeing 737-800 aircraft today after 132 people died when their passenger jet crashed in China this morning after suddenly nose-diving and plummeting 30,000ft in two minutes and hitting the ground at 350mph.

However, more than 18 hours after communication was lost with the plane, there is still no word about the fate of passengers and crew members - leaving families waiting to learn whether anyone survived.

Local villagers were the first to arrive at the crash site on Monday, where the aircraft sparked a fire large enough to be captured on NASA satellite images.

Hundreds of rescue workers were subsequently dispatched from Guangxi and the neighbouring Guangdong province.

Relatives of crew members have also arrived at a China Eastern office near the Kunming airport where the plane took off, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

The broadcaster says China Eastern has set up nine teams to deal with disposal of the plane, accident investigation, family assistance and other pressing issues.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) and China Eastern both say they have sent officials to the crash site.

State media reported all 737-800s in the airline's fleet were ordered grounded following the crash. The model is the predecessor to the controversial 737 Max model but is regarded as safe despite a series of crashes over its long history.

Speaking to The Sun Online, aviation expert Sally Gethin said flight data suggests there was a "10 to 20-second spell where one or more of the pilots regained consciousness and tried to save the plane" before it smashed inthe the ground.

All of those on board "would have been unconscious" for this final plunge, Gethin suggests.
