The former federal Labor MP allegedly used false information to receiving a grant totaling $25,000 from the state government's COVID-19 relief payment schemes.

Former federal Labor MP Craig Thomson has been charged after allegedly using fraudulent documents to receive a grant from the government's COVID-19 relief payment schemes.

Thomson, 57, allegedly used false information to make applications for the Small Business COVID-19 Support grant and the COVID-19 Small Business Hardship grant totalling $25,000.

NSW Police said has been charged with two counts of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception, publishing false and misleading material to obtain advantage and making false documents to obtain financial advantage.

He also allegedly submitted a fraudulent application for JobSaver payments of $3,000 a fortnight, which was not approved or paid.

Services NSW's Fraud Response Unit and detectives from Strike Force Sainsbery was established to investigate the fraudulent applications made against the NSW Government in November 2021.

Following extensive enquiries, detectives travelled to Gosford Police Station where the former Labor MP had spent the night where he was charged on an "unrelated matter".

Thompson was arrested for allegedly breaching an apprehended violence order (AVO) just hours after pleading guilty to several domestic violence-related charges involving his former wife.

The 57-year-old has been refused bail and is due to appear at Gosford Local Court on Wednesday.

The former trade union official was elected as the federal member for the Central Coast seat of Dobell in the 2007 election before he was booted from the Labor Party in 2012.

He was formally expelled from the NSW Labor Party in 2014.
