Running on an anti-corruption platform, Volodymyr Zelensky won a landslide election in 2019 to become the president of Ukraine. Three months after taking office, Zelensky forced a prosecutor to resign who Joe Biden had praised as "solid." The prosecutor, named Yuriy Lutsenko, had dropped all criminal charges against a corrupt oligarch who had paid more than $3.3 million to a firm co-owned by Hunter Biden, Joe Biden's son. The prior president of the Ukraine appointed Biden's "solid" prosecutor in 2016 after Biden threatened to withhold a billion dollars from the Ukraine unless the previous prosecutor was fired. The prosecutors who served before and after Biden's prosecutor of choice both pursued criminal charges against Hunter's benefactor, and one of them stated that he was investigating Hunter. Upon taking office, President Zelensky told President Trump that he "will work on the investigation of the case."
