House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Wednesday that she supports embattled Rep. Henry Cuellar’s (D-Tex.) reelection bid in Texas, despite an ongoing FBI investigation and a primary runoff race against a liberal candidate in May.

On May 24, Cuellar will face immigration lawyer Jessica Cisneros in a runoff election sparked by a very tight primary race earlier this month, in which neither candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote.

Pelosi did not endorse Cuellar for the initial primary race, but during a visit to Austin Wednesday she affirmed her support for the Laredo Democrat.

“I support my incumbents,” Pelosi said, according to the Texas Tribune. “I support every one of them, from right to left. That is what I do.”

The famous "gonzo journalist" Hunter S. Thompson once said, "Politics is the art of controlling your environment." The confirmation hearing of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is about to vividly show what Thompson meant. Less than two years after the abusive treatment of Justice Amy Coney Barrett, the Senate is holding a hearing that is dramatically different in the treatment of the Supreme Court nominee and the issues considered relevant to her confirmation.

While running for the presidency in 2020, Joe Biden promised to appoint the first black, female Supreme Court justice. In January when a place opened up on the court, he repeated that pledge. To only murmurs of concern. Is this really how things have to work in America?

Last week the president announced that he was going to put forward Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson for the lifetime appointment. Democrats were thrilled. Most Republicans saw a trap and kept away. Almost no one dug any deeper. But they should.
