NEW YORK — Deutsche Bank AG, Germany’s biggest bank, said Thursday that it helped finance construction of the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz–a surprise revelation that came in the middle of its bid to buy America’s eighth biggest bank.
The announcement, made by the company’s historian in Frankfurt, cast a shadow over the German bank’s effort to complete its planned $10.1-billion takeover of Bankers Trust. However, Deutsche Bank speedily set up a meeting with one of its chief Jewish critics, the World Jewish Congress.
The New York-based WJC, which is negotiating with the bank, is expected to try to block the planned merger unless Deutsche Bank agrees to pay reparations to Holocaust victims or to set up a process under which victims will be paid.
The meeting will be held by Monday and will include representatives of the German government, which is considering an umbrella plan to pay reparations to Holocaust victims on behalf of German industries and businesses…

On Friday, the Supreme Court put the judge’s order on hold “insofar as its precludes the Navy from making deployment, assignment, and other operational decisions.” That frees up the Navy to issue deployment orders based on Covid vaccination status.
Three justices — Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch — said they would have denied the Navy’s request.
In a separate dissenting opinion for himself and Gorsuch, Alito said the court rubber stamped the Navy’s request, doing “a great injustice” to the sailors.
“These individuals appear to have been treated shabbily by the Navy,” Alito said.

The main actors in the establishment of the BIS were the then Governor of The Bank of England, Montague Norman and his German colleague Hjalmar Schacht.
Under [Montaque] Norman's Governorship, the bank [of England] underwent significant change. In 1931 the United Kingdom permanently abandoned the gold standard, at which point the bank's foreign exchange and gold reserves were transferred to the British Treasury.
He was a close friend of the German Central Bank president Hjalmar Schacht and the godfather to one of Schacht's grandchildren. Both were members of the Anglo-German Fellowship and the Bank for International Settlements.
Norman's exact role and responsibility as director of the BIS during the time when 6,000,000 English pounds of Czechoslovak gold held in the Bank of England was transferred to the German Reichsbank in 1939, is yet to be determined.
German Central Bank President Hjalmar Schacht would later become Adolf Hitler's finance minister.
The original board of directors of the BIS included two appointees of Hitler, Walter Funk a prominent Nazi official, and Emil Puhl, both convicted at the Nuremberg trials after World War II, as well as Herman Schmitz the director of IG Farben and Baron von Schroeder, the owner of the J.H.Stein Bank, the bank that held the deposits of the Gestapo.
(5:30) Hitler becomes chancellor of Germany in 1933 and appoints Hjalmar Schacht as the head of the Reichbank and Nazi representative at the BIS. Even Hitler was morally aghast at the way Schacht would swindle people out of their money.
