A marine friend exited after his time was up simply because of how bad the discipline ( lack thereof ) got. Was rebuilding houses in some shithole country and his unit got fired on. Most of his unit freaked the fuck out and lacked any discipline to maintain composure. He got out because people in his unit were gonna get him killed.
