Tenn rally yesterday POTUS explained that by renegotiating NAFTA, the US could save ~100b in trade deficits w/MEX.
The tariffs are a re-negotiating strategy, position of strength.
Further explained that a reduction in the trade deficit w/MEX would be same as MEX paying for the wall.
So …
Tariffs will pay for the wall
or renegotiated NAFTA w/reduced trade deficit pays for the wall.
Either way, MEX pays for the wall.
Sorry for responding to self , just realized something else …
The projected cost for the entire wall is only ~19b.
Tariffs stay in place until nafta renegotiated.
So it would have been cheaper for MEX to pay for the wall outright.
Had they done that, POTUS would have still renegotiated nafta but would very likely have exempted MEX from these tariffs like he did w/others.
