FBI takes control over Russia's VPNFilter router botnet

25 May, 2018

The FBI has seized control of a key domain used to control routers infected with 'VPNFilter' malware that US and Ukraine has attributed to Kremlin-backed hackers.

The Justice Department on Wednesday announced the seizure of a single domain, toknowall[.]com, which served as part of the command and control infrastructure used by VPNFilter, the router malware revealed by Ciscoโ€™s Talos Intelligence on Wednesday.

>This apply to all routers?

I'm not sure all routers are affected by this malware.

In general a hard reset to factory defaults is needed to clear most malware. If the malware is sophisticated it can write itself to the firmware and even a hard reset won't eliminate it, in those situations you need to re-install the firmware or update the firmware.
